We had a great month of May even though I was out of the country for two weeks we still managed to sneak in three “Once in a Lifetime tastings” and there is still one left!!  This Saturday we still have a few seats remaining for our vintage Piedmont Tasting.  Check out the line-up for this epic Barolo versus Barbaresco battle and see some great vintage Barbera that will change your mind about this grape varietals ability to age with everything on the table over 15 years of age.

Next week is June and we will start the month by making some time for a few light and refreshing summer whites.  Our subject of study next week at Cafe Maxx will be white wines that are perfect for summer time.

These tastings at the Cafe Maxx for $35 are the best value of any event that we do. You get to try 8 different wines at the same time, pre-poured so they have a chance to open up and so you can go back through the line-up to get a second and third look at everything. This is how you learn about wine and with master chef Oliver Saucy sending out a few small courses to accompany the wines, you get a taste of Cafe Maxx and an education in wine all at the same time. A great way to spend happy hour.

Tonight we will feature an array of white wines from around the world that are clean and refreshing just in time for the summer.   This is a pre-poured sit down tasting and is limited to 25 tasters, the fee for this tasting is $35 + Gratuity + tax for reservations call 954-523-9463.

2014 Sauvion Rose D'Anjou

A Cabernet Franc 15% and Grenache blend, this wine has a beautiful bouquet of fresh rose petals, 38 hectares here in Anjou and they have vineyards in all these regions but they also buy fruit, raspberry and strawberry like fruit very fresh and lively on the tongue with a lovely balance and a done dry finish, light red berry fruit and pretty floral notes with a hint of tongue tingly mineral on the finish. Finish 35+ Excellent

2013 Sauvion Muscadet Sevre et Maine

Melon de Bourgogne, white apple, pear and white flowers with all stainless steel aged on the lees for a bit of creaminess and the saltiness. A very light and fresh wine with the tongue tingly mineral briny notes through the finish. Finish 30+ Very Good +

2014 Sauvion Vouvray

They have chalky soils here and that is what Chenin Blanc loves, these wines have wonderful acidity and minerality, a slight salty quality, an off dry style of Vouvray, stone fruits up front and then citrus character on the finish. This wine has 19 grams of residual sugar but with this pronounced acidity, the PH is the most important thing, 3.41 which means everything is completely ripe. A lovely richness on the tongue with great balance and depth of fruit, very intense but has wonderful freshness and balance through the finish. Finish 40+ Excellent

2013 Sauvion Sancerre

This is 100% Sauvignon Blanc and the only soils that can give this varietal the water supply they need is the clay soils of the Loire valley they have a nice expression of this varietal, white grapefruit, lime citrus and just a note of that grassiness and green herbs on the nose. A bright and fresh style with lime citrus, white grapefruit and a touch of that grassiness through the finish. Finish 40 Excellent

2012 Lincourt Chardonnay Steel Santa Rita Hills

This is all estate fruit and is fermented in stainless steel thus we have pure unadulterated Chardonnay, a wine that is bursting with apples, pears, lemon citrus and tropical guava. Very fresh and lively on the tongue with a few years of bottle age to give it some complexity but still very fresh and lively on the finish. Finish 35+

2012 Vavasour Sauvignon Blanc Awatere Valley

A good amount of fresh green herbs and passion fruit on the nose with hints of green mango and sea salt. Zesty tropical fruit on the tongue with mango and papaya fruit lime citrus and a hint of that sea salt on the finish nice savory mouth watering finish. Finish 35 Very Good

2010 Two Sisters Chardonnay Courtney's Vineyard Santa Rita Hills

The Two Sisters wines are named after Bill & Carol Foley’s daughters Lindsay & Courtney. The wines come from the best blocks of Chardonnay (Courtney's Vineyard) and Pinot Noir (Lindsay's Vineyard) at our estates in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. These limited-production bottlings feature heritage, heirloom and select clones chosen specifically for their inherent attributes and compatibility with the terroir of each vineyard block. A cool, wet spring and a cool, dry summer ensured a long, slow ripening cycle. We harvested all of our Two Sisters Chardonnay on October 21st with little impact from the late-season heat and rain. Overall the vintage yielded wines with great flavor and structure.

The 2010 Two Sisters Chardonnay is a persuasive combination of finesse and concentration. The aromatics offer layers of citrus, baking spice and grilled almonds. The palate is powerful and crisp, a reflection of low yields and firm acidity. Displaying great intensity, length and balance, this is a fine example of cool-climate Chardonnay from superior terroir.
