We are hosting virtual tastings every Wednesday on Zoom and Instagram live which will be posted to Instagram TV.  Join us as we welcome one of the top producers from Paso Robles on Wednesday, September 23th at 6pm EST.  We will be showing four wines from Justin Winery and we have a package of these four wines listed on this e-mail and in the Wine Watch gift Box section of the Web page if you want to follow along you can purchase all four wines in one pack or any of the wines individually on our web page just type in Justin and you will find the selections we are showcasing for the event.

We have been big fans of Justin Winery from the very beginning and have hosted many events over the years with founder Justin Baldwin.  He sold the winery but is still working to promote the wines with his namesake on the bottle.  We are also excited to have both Justin and Joseph Spellman MW on the Zoom call to talk about the history of this landmark Paso Robles winery and taste through some of the new releases.  We invite you to follow along live for this tasting and remember please dress appropriately if you are on our zoom call.

About Justin Winery:
Formerly a corporal in the U.S. Marine corps, Justin Baldwin, does not exude the regimented and uptight manner of a militant.  On the contrary he is a happy go lucky man with the opinion that if you don’t like his wines, that’s fine- they’re not for you.  He and his wife Debbie started one of the most accommodating wineries in all of California with an Inn- the “Just Inn”, right on the winery property.  Surrounded by hundreds of acres of quiet blissful vineyards, rolling hills and oak studded ridges, this is an oasis for traveling Chefs (guest chef dinners are scheduled monthly and feature some of the top chefs from across the country).  It is also an excellent venue for a wedding, anniversary or just a romantic weekend getaway.

Justin knew when he started that it would take more than an excellent marketing strategy and being in the right place to make it to the show, (Paso Robles is possibly the best area in Central California for Cabernet based wines).  His wines were good, but to get to that next level he would have to find a winemaker that could put his wines over the top.  In 1993 he came across Steve Glossner.

Winemaker Steve Glossner, a Pennsylvania native, received his first honors at Cornell University’s school of business.  He then decided to compliment the business degree with a graduate study in “fermentation science” (winemaking) at Fresno State.  Steve is a strong believer that wine is made in the vineyard, and has done extensive study on the importance of barrels in winemaking.  This is as much a business for him as it is a passion.  It was a long winding road to Justin that took him through some of the best cellars in California; Matanzas Creek, Byron and Clos Du Bois, as well as one of the most noteworthy producers of Sauvignon Blanc in the world- New Zealand’s Cloudy Bay.  He is constantly honing his craft by traveling to far away places like New Zealand, Australia and most recently to France and Portugal to discuss new and old techniques that are being employed to get better extraction, more depth of flavors and better vineyard management.  On this trip he visited with David Guimaraens, winemaker for Fonseca and Taylor Port houses in Oporto.  David took a day out of his busy schedule to give Steve some pointers and brought him out to the view the beautiful terraced vineyards for which the area has become so famous.  Maybe this had something to do with the quality of the 1997 Obtuse, a port style Cabernet Sauvignon based wine, it is one of the best we have ever tasted from California.

The wines have received mixed review from the press Connoisseurs Guide to California Wine rated the 1992 “Society Reserve” an impressive two stars, ironically they reviewed it again in the very next issue rating it as ordinary with no stars.  The infamous Robert Parker, publisher and writer of The Wine Advocate, seems to be very impressed with the wines judging by this remark- “One taste of a Justin red wine will reveal that these folks know how to make fine wine.  All of these wines display the complexity and elegance of a top notch Bordeaux, combined with the richness and chewy texture of a fine California red.”  In 1994 the Wine Enthusiast named Justin one of the top 10 producers of Cabernet Sauvignon in America.  Justin is well on its way to super- stardom and if the latest releases are any indication of what is to come the future looks incredibly bright for this shining star of the Central Coast.

Today, Fred Holloway is at the winemaking helm.  For over 30 years, Fred Holloway has helped create some of the most honored wines in California. In the 1990s, he helped produce the award-winning Artisan Series for the Jess Jackson Family. That led to other opportunities, and a bevy of high-scoring wines. Fred joined JUSTIN in 2003, where his knowledge and commitment make him an exceptional part of the JUSTIN team.

Scot Shirley has Fred’s back and after creating award-winning wine in Napa Valley for 13 vintages, Scott Shirley took on the challenge of an entirely new appellation: Paso Robles. He combines a scientific background with an artistic approach, and greets each harvest like a painter facing a blank canvas, open to the possibilities.

In 1987, we made our first vintage of a wine styled after the famous First Growth producers of Bordeaux, created with the same uncompromising care as the Grands Vins of those venerable chateaux. For more than 25 vintages, ISOSCELES has been our flagship wine and quality benchmark for this style of wine here on the Central Coast of California. A blend based on Cabernet Sauvignon supported by Cabernet Franc and Merlot, the 2017 ISOSCELES shows why Paso Robles is such a great place to grow these varieties. Full-bodied, with ripe black fruit, complex barrel spice and amazingly ready to drink right out of the gate, you can try a bottle or two now, but make sure to save a few to enjoy this wine as it continues to evolve after some time in the cellar.
