“I love everything that is old; old friends, old times, old manners, old books, old wines. “

- Oliver Goldsmith, The Vicar of Wakefield

Next week is just another average week for us here at the Wine Watch with upwards of 100 different wines being offered at our events for your wine tasting pleasure.

First we have our Wednesday night Piedmont tasting at Cafe Maxx featuring 8 wines from the Piedmont.  This is one of the best values of all the events that we host.

Then we have the biggest event of the year that we host with the New Times, it’s time for Pairings at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.  This event is more like a big party with food and wine as the theme and it is a very unique event in that each of the restaurants dishes are paired with a specific wine to create a unique food and wine tasting experience.  We are expecting over 1000 people for this event so we advise you to come early and pay the extra $$ for the VIP we have an additional 30 wines in the VIP this year!!

And the coup de grâce for this week is our Friday event that we have on this e-mail where we will experience vintage Grand Cru Classe Bordeaux going all the way back to the legendary 1959 vintage!!  This is part of our "Once in a lifetime" series of tastings and this time of year we have a lot of these as we get ready for the upcoming holiday season.  After Thanksgiving we will have to slow things down as far as the tastings go to accommodate the extra business we do in the store with our gift box selections.

Speaking of our Wine Watch Gift boxes, now is the time to start planning for your corporate gifts for the holidays and there is no better gift than the gift of wine!  Wine Watch offers a wide selection of different themed wine gift boxes and we have one of the most upscale and unique presentations in the wine business.  We will have our 2014 gift box selections up on our web page by the end of this month.

We only have a few seats left for this Vintage Bordeaux tasting so if you are interested in attending you better hit the respond button quickly!  Wine Watch Caterings Toni Lampasone will be making a few small courses to accompany the tasting wines.  The fee for this tasting is $195 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463.

1959 Chateau Talbot St. Julien

(86 Points) An elegantly proportioned wine. Medium ruby-garnet, with a delicate, flowery cherry aroma. Full-bodied, with an elegant backbone.--1959 Bordeaux horizontal. –JS  Wine Spectator, Issue: Oct 15, 1990

1961 Chateau Talbot St. Julien

(88 Points) Really lively, fresh and appetizing. There are plenty of cherry and berry flavors, a smooth texture and great balance. Youthful; drink through 2005.--1961 Bordeaux horizontal. –  Wine Spectator Issue: Apr 30, 1996

1966 Chateau Talbot St. Julien

(77 Points) Age has given this wine some complexity as a result of bottle bouquet. However, this vintage did not produce a profound example of Talbot. Hard, austere, lean flavors reveal little evidence that rich, ripe fruit is hidden behind a shield of tannin and acidity. The color is light, the fruit just adequate, the finish short. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 9/84.  Bordeaux Book, 3rd Edition, Jan 1998

1982 Chateau Talbot St. Julien

(95 Points) Along with the 1986, the 1982 is one of the greatest Talbots ever made. Far more evolved than its stablemate, Gruaud Larose, it exhibits a dense garnet color to the rim along with a huge, sweet, exotic nose of charcoal, beef blood, licorice, herbs, and black fruits. A hint of figs suggests borderline overripeness, but the wine remains fleshy and full-bodied with sweet tannin and an expansive, heady mouthfeel. While fully mature, it should hold for another decade. Release price: ($115.00/case)  Wine Advocate #183, Jun 2009

1986 Chateau Talbott St. Estephe

(96 Points) A fabulous wine, and one of the two greatest Talbots of the last 50 years, this wine still has a very murky garnet/plum/purple color and a spectacular nose of sweet creme de cassis intermixed with freshly ground pepper, melted road tar, herbes de Provence, and beef blood. It is followed by an enormously concentrated wine of full body, layers of concentration and sweet tannin. The wine seems to be just hitting its plateau of maturity, where it should last for at least 10-15 more years. A prodigious Talbot. Anticipated maturity: Now-2020. Last tasted, 6/02.  Bordeaux Book, 4th Edition, Jan 2003

1982 Chateau Lynch Bages Pauillac

(93 Points) Beautifully mature with sweet, sun-drenched black currant, fig, roasted herb and loamy soil characteristics, the dark plum/garnet-colored 1982 possesses opulent, fleshy flavors and a full-bodied finish. All the tannins are resolved, the acidity is low and this deliciously savory, rich wine is in full bloom. Drink the complex, beautiful 1982 now and over the next decade.  Wine Advocate #196, Aug 2011

1982 Chateau La Fleur Petrus Pomerol

(96 Points) A massive wine, traditional in style but amazing. Like a great '47. Inky in color, with an amber edge. Extremely ripe, with mineral, berry, cherry, meat and pepper. Big and burly, with full velvety tannins. Still needs time.--1982 Bordeaux horizontal. Best after 2003. –JS  Wine Spectator, Issue: Nov 30, 1998

1982 Branaire Ducru St. Estephe St. Julien

(93 Points) A strong effort for this estate, the 1982 exhibits sweet aromas of plums, licorice, earth, and flowers. The tannins are slightly rustic, but the sweetness of the fruit, the broad expansive mouthfeel, and the wine’s full maturity represent a classic Bordeaux at the top of its game. Enjoy it over the next 5-8 years.   Wine Advocate #183, Jun 2009

1988 Chateau Climens Sauternes Price: $210.00

(96 Points) The 1988 reveals layer upon layer of honeyed pineapple-and orange-scented and -flavored fruit, vibrant acidity, high levels of botrytis, and a fabulously long, yet well-focused finish. It is a great wine. Anticipated maturity: 1998-2015. Wine Advocate #98, Apr 1995
