2009 Pelissero Barbera D'alba Tulin
Price: $33.00       Sale $29.04          Case $337
Quantity in Stock: 3

(89 Points)  A new addition to the lineup, the single-vineyard 2009 Barbera d’Alba Tulin wraps around the palate with blackberries, smoke, tar and licorice. From a stylistic point of view, the Tulin is a decidedly racy, at times super-ripe wine clearly marked by two years in barrel. This is certainly a promising wine. It will be interesting to see what develops in future vintages. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. Pelissero is without question one of the top-tier estates in Barbaresco. Every wine in this lineup is solid and well worth seeking out. In particular, the 2009 Barbareschi are some of the very finest wines I have ever tasted here. The management of the tannins – such a problem at other estates – was expertly handled. Pelissero’s 2010 Barbareschi had been bottled just before my visit and were too closed down to properly evaluate.  Wine Advocate #203Oct 2012

2011 Pelissero Nebbiolo Langhe
Price: $25.00       Sale $22.00          Case $255

(89 Points) The 2011 Langhe Nebbiolo is a gorgeous entry-level wine from Giorgio Pelissero. The dark side of Nebbiolo emerges from this supple, gracious, inviting Nebbiolo. Cloves, spices, menthol and licorice flesh out on the finish. -- Antonio Galloni

2011 Pelissero Barbaresco Nubiola
Price: $42.00       Sale $36.96          Case $428

(94 Points)  The 2011 Barbaresco Nubiola is exceptionally beautiful and expressive. Spices, dark red stone fruits, mint and leather all meld together in a pliant, expressive Barbaresco that will drink well early. Sweet floral notes, anise and rose petal are laced throughout the finish. Ripe, silky tannins provide the backdrop for a gracious, understated Barbaresco. The 2011 brings together the freshness of the 2010 with the fruit density of the 2009, a pretty appealing combination in my book. -- Antonio Galloni

2010 Pelissero Barbaresco "Nubiola" Magnum
Price: $88.00       Sale $77.44

(94 Points)  The 2010 Barbaresco Nubiola is impeccable. Dark red cherries, freshly cut flowers, mint and crushed rocks take shape in the glass. The style is focused, tense and energetic. Sweet floral, tobacco and spice notes develop in the glass, adding depth, complexity and nuance. The Nubiola often presents a fairly classic array of flavors and textures. The 2010 has a little more volume and depth than normal, which serves to round out some of the contours. A blast of fruit and floral aromatics leaves a lasting impression. Galloni

2010 Pelissero Barbaresco Tulin
Price: $90.00       Sale $79.20
Quantity in Stock: 11

(94 Points)  Pelissero's 2010 Barbaresco Tulin explodes from the glass with a head-spinning array of aromas and flavors. Rich, full-bodied and intense, the 2010 boasts stunning depth to match its racy, intense structure. Deeply spiced, mentholated notes saturate the full-bodied, voluptuous finish. The combination of fruit and structure is super exciting, to say the least.  Galloni

2010 Pelissero Barbaresco Vanotu
Price: $90.00       Sale $79.20
Quantity in Stock: 8

(94 Points) The 2010 Barbaresco Vanotu is an extremely persuasive expression of Nebbiolo that opens to a dark, brooding color, thick concentration and an attractive dark garnet hue. The personality here is overtly savory and masculine with layers of cured meat and leather that support a wider offering of pressed cherries and tar. The generosity is outstanding. The only element out of place is the tannin that is spectacularly young at this point. This wine won’t show its best side for years more to come. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2035. Giorgio Pelissero has a good amount of news to report from his corner of the Barbaresco appellation. He is putting the finishing touches on a new winery with extra room for storing old vintages. He is also about to announce the acquisition of four additional hectares that will bring his total vineyard holdings to an impressive 40 hectares (with 15 hectares of Nebbiolo in the Barbaresco denomination). 2004 Pelissero Barbaresco Vanotu
Price: $90.25       Sale $79.42

(92)The estate's 2004 Barbaresco Vanotu is the most deeply-colored and concentrated of these offerings. A brooding wine, its flavor profile is dominated by ripe dark cherries and plums, earthiness, licorice, smoke and sweet toasted oak. This is a beautiful, modern-styled Barbaresco. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019.Wine Advocate # 173, Oct 2007

1999 Pelissero Barbaresco Annata
Price: $85.00       Sale $74.80

(93 Points) A dark, powerful wine, the 1999 Barbaresco bursts from the glass with notable depth, intensity and pure resonance. Black cherry, plum, smoke, tobacco and licorice meld together in a Barbaresco endowed with magnificent richness and breadth. The 1999 is a bit rustic in style, which is typical of the year, but it also has enough volume to drink well for another 5-7. This is a magnificent showing. -- Antonio Galloni

Galloni on Pelissero:

"Giorgio Pelissero has been on a roll over the last few years. Every wine that emerges from this cellar is now fabulous, which places Pelissero in the top echelon of Piedmont producers. Stylistically, the wines are super-rich and concentrated, but also impeccable in their balance. The 2010 Barbarescos are among the best wines I have ever tasted here. Specifically, the use of French oak has improved considerably."

A bit about Pelissero Winery:

With the medieval tower of Barbaresco on the left and the Guarene castle on the right, the welcoming hills of the Langhe appear on the road from Asti. Behind Guarene and Roero, there are the Alps and France, but on driving through the valley, one loses sight of them and they seem far away. Climbing the hills towards Barbaresco or Treiso, which is higher up, one finds them again, majestic and clear. When the sky is clear, one can see Monte Rosa and Monviso. At sunset, when the sun shines, one remains breathless. In the adventure which is perception, one can feel these mountains in the wine goblet. Layers of sandstone and blue marlstone: here is the ancient sea that runs under the vines. There are no seashells to place near the ear to feel the suggestion of the sea, but there is the wine goblet.

Here the word terroir acquires real meaning, there are subtle shades on the back of the very same hill, and it's expressed by the Nebbiolo varietal. The river Tanaro runs through the middle of the hills influencing the land and climate and creating, like a magical scenographer, the typical fogs which are a fall spectacle.

The story of Pelissero begins with the first bottles in 1960, utilizing artisanal methods in a small cellar on the ground floor of their home. Today this process is carried out in a new cellar surrounded by vineyards and located in the zone called Augenta.

It is located at about 410 meters elevation in the highest township of the Barbaresco zone. This particular geographic location allows for an almost 360 degree view over the Langa hills, offering a magnificent visual trip towards the horizon. It brings to mind the wine cellar and hints at the long journey that Pelissero wine undertakes to reach the almost fifty countries.

The Pelissero family has always been dedicated to agriculture with a Langa and peasant DNA. Located in Treiso, a township that became independent from Barbaresco in 1957, and which is in the heart of the production zone of one of the top three Italian DOCG, King Nebbiolo. Nebbiolo rules supreme in Piedmont. It is the grape varietal that more than any other has defined and will continue to define the history of Pelissero and of the national and international wine making.

Three generation of viticulturists at Pelissero embody the spirit of continuous research in the vineyard, and afterwards in the cellar, plus passion, commitment and innovative dynamism. The family’s philosophy has not changed; however focus continues on original varietals that are typical to the land, particularly Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto, which make up about 85% of the production. All the grapes are grown on the 38 hectares owned by Pelissero, thus allowing direct supervision of the entire production cycle, from pruning to marketing of 250,000 bottles every year.

Pelissero Barbaresco Vanotu

http://vinconnect.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/label-vanotu-2008.jpg

Characteristics: Vanotu is the diminutive in Piedmontese dialect of Giovanni, Giorgio's grandfather and previous owner of this vineyard. Therefore it is a part of our winery to which we are very fond of. Thanks to the particular climate and exposure of this vineyard we can obtain even in poor vintages great character and personality wines.

Technical notes: produced through modern and innovative methods (controlled temperatures, mechanical automatic timed and planned punching) trying to lead into the bottle the maximum exaltation of the varietal characteristics of Nebbiolo grapes. Aged for 20/22 months in barriques (80% of them are new) then 9 months in bottles we aim at creating concentration, fruit, soft tannic complexity. Our will is to make an innovative wine trying to maintain and exalt the great qualities of Nebbiolo. The first bottled vintage was in 1960.

Pelissero Barbaresco Tulin
http://shop.langhe.net/files/2014/07/Barbaresco-Tulin-2009.jpg

Characteristics: Tulin is the new name, since 2001 vintage, of Barbaresco Annata. After seven years, sustained by the appreciations of public and critics, we have decided to name this wine after the vineyard where the grapes for this wine come from, whose climate, composition of the soil and exposure are of great value.
In local dialect Tulin indicates a small circular metal vessel as commonly used in churches for retention of the melted wax from the candles or distribution of food to the cattle in the stables. A melting pot of spirituality and handicraft, the soul and hands of Vinegrowers. Tulin is pronounced with the accent on the i.

Technical notes: our will to lead into bottle the grapes characteristics conditions all the operations of transformation and ageing. This wine is produced with modern techniques and tools, but still in traditional way trying to harmonize the austerity of this great vine with the new conceptions of persuasiveness and pleasantness linked to international tastes. Maceration in contact with the skins for about 15 days in steel casks in controlled temperature and, after a period of natural decantation always in steel, the wine passes into wood where it rests for 18/20 months. Then the part, about 50%, aged in oak casks of 50 hl is blended with the other part aged in barrique. This allows us to avoid that an excessive presence of wood further dries this wine. Still 9 months in bottles and finally released for sale.

Pelissero Barbaresco Nubiola

http://www.nicholasrobertsltd.com/userfiles/Image/Pelissero_Nubiola.jpg

Characteristics: it is the last born of our Barbaresco wines. The first bottles date back to 2001. It belongs to an historical, traditional and cultural important denomination and it has got all the strength and complexity a great vine is able to express. The blend Nubiola shows in fact the name with which in the historical treaty of agriculture "De Ruralium Commodorum" (dated 1330) where Pier Dè Crescenzi (a jurist of Bologna) mentions one of the best vines known at that time describing it as a "a sort of black grape called Nubiola… wonderfully vinous and adapted for wine making."
Now we call that grape Nebbiolo (Nubiola is pronounced with accent on the o).

Technical notes: the variety Nebbiolo composing for 100% the Barbaresco wine is the focal point of this wine that we consider the starting Barbaresco, the basis from which to start in order to arrive to the best with our two selections. Just for the different composition of the provenience soils, the consequent used wine making techniques and the historicity we wanted to express with the name, it is a very traditional Barbaresco. It is made in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature and automatically programmed soaking of the wine dregs, then aged in wood dosing small barriques and big 50 hl oak cask in variable proportion according to the vintage features always with the intent to exalt the Nebbiolo's variety's characteristics.

Pelissero Barbera Piani

http://www.dockway.com/3601-thickbox_default/pelissero-barbera-d-alba-piani-2010.jpg

Characteristics: Piani, the name of the zone where this vineyard is located, in Italian means "flat" and, in fact, the portion of this hill is little steep. This site has always been well known for high quality Barbera production. The elegance of many Barbera (a grape rich in colour and acidity but poor in tannins) from Langhe region is here integrated with a good structure which gives to this wine a particular identity.

Technical notes: the wine is produced with the aim of exalting its own characteristics: vinosity, complexity and persistency. Maceration takes 15-20 days in stainless steel cask with controlled temperature. Then ageing is about 8-9 months in oak barrels (30-40% in barrique and the remaining in 50 hl barrels). Afterward it is blended and bottled, resting for a couple of months before being put on sale. Low yields, long maceration and correct oak barrels contribution give to this wine unusual longevity, complexity and importance like the noble Nebbiolo.

Pelissero Nebbiolo Langhe

http://cache.wine.com/labels/119250l.jpg

Characteristics: we produce this wine with the grapes that, according to the vintage, are not suitable for making Barbaresco. Among them, all new planted vineyards bought in the past few years, and consequently considered too young for producing a great Barbaresco.

Technical notes: in vinification we try to exalt the Nebbiolo's characteristics of freshness: macerations are not too long and always temperature controlled. Ageing is made partly in barrique (20/30%) and the rest in 50 hl oak barrels for around 8/9 months. After blending, it rests in the bottle for 2 months and finally commercialized.

Pelissero Long Now

http://ct-static.com/labels/309923.jpg

Characteristics: the denomination "Langhe d.o.c." embraces grape growing zones and grape varieties among the best in the world. This wine is all produced in a new vineyard bought in 1999 which is located at a short distance from the head winery on the borders of Barbaresco zone. Very steep soil, characterized by the presence of a Palm tree and, due to a matter of districts borders, only half of this land can be devoted to the cultivation of Nebbiolo for the creation of Barbaresco. In the remaining part, also suggestive and unrecognizable without the aid of topographic tools, the Nebbiolo produced cannot become Barbaresco with ageing. Therefore we have decided to blend Nebbiolo to Barbera also present in our estate in order to give life to what was the most historical blend, already very common since our grandparents' times, but undoubtedly very actual and innovative still today.  The name and the label graphic express these characteristics of innovation and internationality to which the blend of these two varieties can lead to.  The name "Long Now" recalls the long living concept and it is the name given by outstanding Californian scientists (the Long Now Foundation) who referred to the special clock designed on the label which is currently exhibited at the Science Museum of London.

Technical notes:wine of innovative conception produced trying to exalt to the maximum the potentialities of these two varietals, grown from relatively old vines.  Colour and acid freshness come from the Barbera while the great aromaticity and tannic strength come from the Nebbiolo. A blend creating soft, persistent and very long ageing wines.

Pelissero Freisa Langhe

http://www.artisanwinedepot.com/v/vspfiles/photos/pelisseronature12-w-2.jpg

Characteristics: Freisa is an historical grape of our hills. For his characteristics it can be compared with Nebbiolo. In fact, Freisa has not a rich colour but it is rich in tannins. The wine is produced in small quantities in our cellar. In the very first years it was produced as a traditional still wine. Afterwards, due to scarce enthusiasm of the Italian market and to our clients suggestions, we started producing the wine as it is nowadays.

Technical notes: after the traditional maceration and ageing we start the next very delicate phase. The wine is actually produced with "champenoise" method i.e. with a natural refermentation inside the bottle thanks to selected yeasts. The result is a slightly sparkling wine with a very fine and persistent mousse. As a consequence of the re-fermentation you will find a thin layer of sediment at the bottom of the bottle. This sediments contributes to give the wine his typical fragrance and aromas. We suggest, therefore, to decant the wine in a jug to better appreciate the light and persistent foam.
