“It’s a celebration. Clap, clap, bravo./Lobster and shrimp
and a glass of moscato.”
– Drake on Trey Songz’ hit track “I Invented Sex.”
We have an incredible line-up of wine tastings this week with our 1985 vintage Burgundy tasting tomorrow night, Super Rhone on Friday and the California Cult Cabernet Sauvignon tasting this Saturday night. Check out the line-up of wines there are still seats left for all of these tastings!
And Moscato is one of the hottest trending white varietals in the US today. You can find the best examples of this wine from the Piedmont and most of them are under $20 per bottle.
We have two events featuring wines of the Piedmont next Wednesday night and if you have been paying attention you know that the Piedmont is one of my favorite wine regions on earth and this is always one of the tastings that I look forward to the most.
For my taste if you would build a perfect grape varietal it would be Nebbiolo. It has the nuance and spice of Pinot Noir with the structure and tannic backbone of Bordeaux and other Cabernet Sauvignon based wines. Come out and check out my favorite along with a few others from the world’s only place for Nebbiolo!
These tastings at Cafe Maxx for $35 are the best value of any event that we do. Eight wines are pre-poured in order to allow them to open up. Master chef Oliver Saucy will be sending out a few small courses to accompany the wines. These tastings are a great opportunity to get a taste of Cafe Maxx and an education in wine all at the same time, the fee for the tasting in $35+ tax+ Gratuity for reservations call 954-782-0606.
Piedmont Tasting at Cafe Maxx

6:30 PM
Bruna Grimaldi Arneis 2015
Price: $22.50 Sale $19.80 Case $230
The sole white wine produced by Bruna Grimaldi, characterized by perfumes with notes of fruit and flowers and a velvety and gentle taste. It is a wine to drink young.
Giordano Lombardo Gavi di Gavi 2015
Price: $19.50 Sale $17.16 Case $199
Nestled just outside the medieval village of Gavi among verdant woods and picturesque vineyards, the 20 hectares that make up the biodynamic vineyard of Giordano Lombardo straddle the border of the Piedmont and Liguria regions. The indigenous Cortese vines that are grown here give rise to an unadulterated wine that fully embodies the climate, soil and winemaking tradition of the region. Passionately committed to the idea that nature is a resource to be nurtured rather than exploited and misused,
Pico Maccario Rosato 2015
Price: $16.50 Sale $14.52 Case $169
Pale rose in color. Intense, full with relevant flowery notes. Smooth, well balanced, and silky. Made from Barbera.
Aldo Conterno Langhe Rosso 2013
Price: $36.00 Sale $31.68 Case $368
Tarry earth and crushed flower petals frame the red and blue fruits in this ’13 Langhe Rosso; kisses of spice and underbrush complete the nose. Firm, fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity propel this structured, balanced wine to a thrilling, lingering finish. Freisa, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon may seem strange blend for the likes of Aldo Conterno, but it's nothing short of delicious. A blend of 80% old-vine Freisa, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, Aldo Conterno’s Langhe Rosso, which has replaced the estate's famed Quartetto, is an incredible bottle of everyday red. Conterno harvests the grapes from vineyards in Bussia, then vinifies the wine in temperature-controlled stainless steel, and ages it in barriques for a year before bottling.
Scarzello Barbera Superiore 2011
Price: $34.25 Sale $30.14 Case $350
Barbera d’Alba DOC Superiore is the first wine that Federico produced at the end of the 90s and which interprets as best his style. Belong to his philosophy, after Nebbiolo, Barbera is the indigenous vine which better expresses the terroir of Langhe. It’s a full-bodied wine, well structured and balanced by a good acidity. It matches well with tasty food based of red and white meat.
Ada Nada Barbaresco 2011
Price: $45.00 Sale $39.60 Case $459
Bright red and blue fruits dance with rain-spattered wildflowers, warm baking spices, fruit compote, underbrush and telltale Barbaresco terroir. This wine whooshes across the palate with considerable energy, unleashing a sweet inner perfume and a nice mineral core as it builds to a lingering, satisfying finish laden with sweet tannins. The most graceful of Ada Nada’s three Barbarescos, Elisa derives from Nebbiolo vines that are about forty years old grown in calcareous marl. After macerating in temperature-controlled stainless steel, Elisa ages in oak casks for around a year and a half, after which it’s bottled without filtration. The result is a lithe, winsome Barbaresco that shows cherries, strawberries, herbs and minerals. The Barbaresco Elisa will improve over the short-term, but with a little bit of air, it drinks fantastically right now. Fewer than 600 cases produced yearly.
Bruna Grimaldi Barolo 2012
Price: $39.00 Sale $34.32 Case $398
Intense and brilliant garnet color with orange highlights. Ample and intense aromas, with notes of violets, pepper, raspberries, and dried roses along with the classic tar. Full, persistent, and elegant on the palate.
Scarzello Barolo 2006
Price: $65.00 Sale $57.20 Case $663
(92 Points) Bright and full of cherry, floral, mineral and licorice aromas and flavors, this has some dense tannins to shed. Balanced on the muscular side, with a long, supple finish. Best from 2015 through 2032. 500 cases made. –BS Wine Spectator
