“It’s a celebration. Clap, clap, bravo./Lobster and shrimp
and a glass of moscato.”
– Drake on Trey Songz’ hit track “I Invented Sex.”

And Moscato is one of the hottest trending white varietals in the US today.  You can find the best examples of this wine from the Piedmont and most of them are under $20 per bottle.

We have an incredible line-up of wine tastings this week with our Super Chateauneuf Du Pape tasting tomorrow night and then the Cult Oregon/Washington tasting this Saturday night with the wines of Cayuse-  check out the line-up of wines there are still seats left for Saturday’s tasting!

Speaking of the Piedmont for my taste if you would build a perfect grape varietal it would be Nebbiolo. It has the nuance and spice of Pinot Noir with the structure and tannic backbone of Bordeaux and other Cabernet Sauvignon based wines.  Come out and check out my favorite grape varietal along with a few others from the world’s only place for Nebbiolo!

Join us as we make our first study of the Nebbiolo grape here at the new Wine Watch Wine Bar.  This is a seated event and is limited to 24 tasters and the fee is $95 + tax.  For reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

2013 Pelissero Nebbiolo Langhe
Price: $25.50       Sale $22.44          Case $261
Quantity in Stock: 24

Site: Treiso, Neive and Barbaresco villages Variety: Nebbiolo 100% Exposure: south - east - west Altitude: 200 – 400 m. Year of planting: all the Nebbiolo vines for Barbaresco planted in more recent years, up to 15 years old age Breeding form: gujot Density of plants per hectare: 5000 First and unique year of production: 1960 Soil: different soils in Barbaresco area. Characteristics: we produce this wine with the grapes that, according to the vintage, are not suitable for making Barbaresco. Among them, all new planted vineyards bought in the past few years, and consequently considered too young for producing a great Barbaresco. Technical notes: in vinification we try to exalt the Nebbiolo's characteristics of freshness: macerations are not too long and always temperature controlled. Ageing is made partly in barrique (20/30%) and the rest in 50 hl oak barrels for around 8/9 months. After blending, it rests in the bottle for 2 months and finally commercialized. Tasting sheet: clear, bright, purple red with evident clearer tannic nuances around the glass edge. Olfactory sensations are persistent, fragrant and wide open exalting the fruit of the wine. It is also rounded by evident perception of strawberry and raspberry typical in this wine. Good gustative persistence with the classic light tannin astringency of Nebbiolo, very well rounded by the wood aromas and other flavour components (proteins, salts, trivalent salts). Lovely finish, persistent and stimulating.

2013 La Spinetta Nebbiolo Langhe
Price: $34.25    Your Price: $30.14

The La Spinetta Nebbiolo Langhe comes from the youngest part of the Starderi vineyard in Neive. The vines are between 5-7 years old and grown at an altitude of 270 meters on in the same vineyard that produces the Starderi Barbaresco. Harvest usually happens in the middle of October, after which time, the grapes are fermented in rotofermentors for 7-8 days. The wine is then aged in part new, part neutral, medium toast, French barrique. It is then aged for another 2 months in bottle.

This wine is made with the young vines from the Starderi Vineyard in Barbaresco. Aromas of strawberry, wild herbs and flowers and tobacco spice. Sweet berry fruit intermixed with a lovely spice and zesty acidity, an elegant wine with minty notes on the finish. Finish 40+ Excellent

2014 Vietti Nebbiolo Perbacco
Price: $27.00    Your Price: $21.60

There are between 25,000 to 30,000 bottles of the Perbacco produced. The name refers to an old expression that signifies a surprise, which is what this wine is when you find the quality is very surprising for the money. A beautiful bouquet here with an array of pretty floral notes, exotic spices, red berry fruit, lovely intensityof aromas and even better on the second day. Thick and chewy red berry fruit on the tongue with a silky smooth velvety texture on the tongue, this wine has layers of spice, earth and that ticvh liqueur like fruit all the way to the end, a bit tannic right now but with a few years in the bottle this wine will sing Finish 45+ Excellent +

2014 Ettore Germano Nebbiolo Langhe

This small family has been growing grapes in Serralinga De Alba for over 100 years but they have only been making wines under this label since the 1960's. Red cherry fruit with notes of rose petal and red licorice spice, sandlewood, hints of truffles, very pretty bouquet, all stainless fermentation and aging, younger vines from the Prappo, ceretta and Lazarito vineyards. A bright and zesty wine on the tongue tart cherry fruit, pretty floral and spice notes on the finish. Finish 35+ Very Good +

Image result for 2011 Pelissero Barbaresco Nubiola

2011 Pelissero Barbaresco Nubiola
Price: $42.00
Quantity in Stock: 12

(94 Points)  The 2011 Barbaresco Nubiola is exceptionally beautiful and expressive. Spices, dark red stone fruits, mint and leather all meld together in a pliant, expressive Barbaresco that will drink well early. Sweet floral notes, anise and rose petal are laced throughout the finish. Ripe, silky tannins provide the backdrop for a gracious, understated Barbaresco. The 2011 brings together the freshness of the 2010 with the fruit density of the 2009, a pretty appealing combination in my book. -- Antonio Galloni

Image result for 2010 Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Gresy Barbaresco Martinenga

2010 Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Gresy Barbaresco Martinenga
Price: $55.00    Your Price: $48.40

(95 Points) Although the 2010 Barbaresco Martinenga is sold out, Alberto di Gresy and I wanted to make a record of it in the Wine Advocate database. The reason is simple: This is a stunning and impeccable wine that deserves every extra bit of attention. The bouquet is generous and full with lingering tones of balsam herb, forest berry and dark cola. The effect is elegant, polished and smooth. I think this may be the most beautiful Barbaresco Martinenga produced in recent memory. If you have a bottle, hold onto it tight. Some 12,500 bottles were produced.  The Wine Advocate

2011 Cantina Del Glicine Barbaresco Vignesparse

A small producer from Nieve winery dates back to 1510, that is very old for this region, this is a tiny estate, they have vineyard in the townships of curra and marcareno, scattrered vineyards as the name refers to a blend of two different terrains inside of Nieve, 9000 bottles produced.  This wine has a classic bouquet of exotic spices, dried flowers, red cherry liqueur like fruit, very pretty bouquet, cement fermentation, very clean pure style.  Delicious tart red berry fruit on the tongue with an array of spices, and tongue tingly mineraliity through the finish pretty floral notes, has some tannins here at the end but lots of fruit to match quite drinkable but will be better with a few years in the bottle.  Finish 45+    Excellent +

Image result for 2012 Vietti Barolo Castiglione

2012 Vietti Barolo Castiglione
Price: $55.00    Your Price: $48.80

They made 55,000 bottles of this wine, they harvest very early to keep the fresh fruit, very good acidity, a bit riper than 2010 but not as much as 2009. This is a bigger version of Perbacco, with an array of exotic spices, red licorice very thick cherry fruit. A very juicy wine on the palate with an array of spice, pretty floral notes and a long layered finish, very thick and dense on the palate, very complex and long finish. Finish 45+ Most Excellent

Image result for 2011 Giacomo Grimaldi Barolo

2011 Giacomo Grimaldi Barolo
Price: $39.00    Your Price: $34.32

A traditional Barolo: broad, warm, velvety, caressing, balsamic and lingering, the result of grapes from two decidedly interesting vineyards like Terlo and Ravera.

Terlo is in the commune of Barolo alongside Ravera, in the commune of Novello. The combination of these two vineyards gives rise to the most traditional Barolo made by the Grimaldi winery. A classic that evokes the family’s winemaking tradition, and also for this reason does not bear the names of the two crus.

Image result for 2007 E Pira e Figli Barolo Cannubi

2007 E Pira e Figli Barolo Cannubi
Price: $165.00    Sale Price: $139.00

(92 Points) The 2007 Barolo Cannubi is round, sensual and totally inviting. It is one of the most open and rewarding 2007 Baroli I have tasted thus far. I have a preference for the more vibrant Via Nuova in this vintage, but the Cannubi is a fabulous Barolo to drink now and over the next few years. The uninterrupted warmth of the year did not allow for the fruit in this due south-facing parcel to develop its full aromatics, which is the only thing that keeps the score from going higher. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2020. - The Wine Advocate

James Suckling 94 "Fascinating aromas of iron, terra cotta and dried fruits. Full body, with chewy tannins and a juicy finish. Muscular yet polished Barolo. Better in 2018. Better than 2010"

Image result for 1998 Eraldo Viberti Barolo

1998 Eraldo Viberti Barolo
Price: $95.00    Your Price: $83.60

Morello cherries mingle with cigar wrapper, tarry earth, prunes, truffles and spice in this elegant, finessed, and traditional ’98 Barolo from Eraldo Viberti. Tertiary notes are peeping out, but this wine has a beautiful core of vibrant minerality that propels it across the palate with considerable energy. Velvety and complex, this wine glides across the palate and scatters copious polished tannins as it builds to a persistent, nuanced finish. Deriving from three La Morra vineyards that total six acres and sport tufaceous and clay marl, the organically tended grapes ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel for about thirty days, and the wine ages for two years in barrels.
