Burgundy makes you think of silly things, Bordeaux makes you talk of them and Champagne makes you do them. -- Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin

I often get asked what my favorite wine is and this question is hard to answer as I love a lot of different wines but if I only had three to choose from at my last supper they would be Champagne, Barolo and Pomerol.

These are the three wines that I enjoy the most and this is one of the last “Once in a Lifetime” wine tastings this year!  Toni will be making a special three course menu for this event and the fee for this tasting is $225+ tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

2010 Marc Hebrart Special Club Brut Champagne
Price: $89.00  Sale $78.32  Case $908

Jean-Paul Hébrart makes one of our favorite Rosé Champagnes, which we bring back around the holidays. In the meanwhile, we think you should try the 2010 Special Club. In case you are unfamiliar with this term, 'Special Club' is a classification of ultra high quality determined by a handpicked group of growers. Comprised of 28 artisan winemakers in Champagne, including Jean-Paul and his father Marc at one time, the Club Trésors de Champagne doesn't confer the 'Special Club' classification to just any bubbly. They impose the strictest of standards to the members' wine. For instance: all fruit must be estate-grown on specific plots expressing terroir clearly; the wines must be aged for at least three years; before the wine is finally put into the Club's designated squat bottles, it is tasted again after disgorgement. The 2010 is a Vallée de la Marne, Coeur de Cuvée (heart of the free-run) blend of 35% old vines Pinot Noir from Mareuil, 20% Pinot from Aÿ, 25% old-vines Chardonnay from Mareuil, and 20% Chard from Oiry and Chouilly. Disgorged July 2014.

Flavor Profile: "I must again speculate that there’s a tiny tip of the pyramid in 2010 that will give sensational wines in an otherwise 'meh' vintage that tends to run lean. Otherwise I can scarcely comprehend how this wine can be so amazingly good. It only indicates the vintage by being ever-so-slightly airy in the finish. But what precedes that has many of the virtues of the supernal 2008... the chalk is a powdery quilt of richness." Terry Theise, Importer

1990 Perrier Jouet Champagne Belle Epoche
Price: $199.00    Sale $175.00

(94 Points) A grand, traditional Champagne in the best sense. Full-bodied, beautifully balanced and luxuriously smooth in texture, offering subtle, complex accents of toasted almond to complement the base of fine fruit flavor. Drink now through 2003. – Wine Spectator Issue: Dec 15, 1998

Flight Three/Four - Pomerol/Barolo Blind Tasting

Image result for 1975 Chateau Trotanoy Pomerol

1975 Chateau Trotanoy Pomerol
Price: $495.00    Sale $435.60

(95 Points) The exquisite 1975 Trotanoy gets my nod as one of the three finest wines produced at this estate in the last 25 years (the others being 1970 and 1982). This wine has been drinking splendidly for several years, exhibiting fabulous mocha/toffee/jammy black-cherry aromas in a complex, sweet, fragrant bouquet. Full-bodied, splendidly concentrated, velvety-textured, with a firm finish, this is a weighty, rich, complex, great vintage for Trotanoy. Drink it over the next 10-15 years. Like so many top Pomerols in the 1975 vintage, there is a sweetness and jamminess to this wine's fruit that is not found in most 1975 Medocs. ...The Wine Advocate

Image result for 1982 Borgogno Barolo Riserva

1982 Borgogno Barolo Riserva
Price: $285.00    Sale $250.80
Quantity in Stock: 5

80% blend of grapes from various vineyards in the town of Barolo, including Liste, San Pietro delle Viole, Brunate, Cannubi and Cannubi-Boschis 20% of grapes are purchased from local grape growers (mostly La Morra and Barolo)Garnet red in color, this wine has a complex and fruit forward nose layered with aromas of wood, spices, resin, tobacco and a hint of smoke. Full-bodied with the warmth of alcohol, it has a smooth, silky finish. A strong and very pleasant wine, it has great structure and an enormous potential for ageing.

Image result for 1995 Chateau L'Evangile Pomerol Magnum

1995 Chateau L'Evangile Pomerol (Magnum)
Price: $495.00    Sale $435.60

(92 points) This wine is closed, backward, and marginally less impressive than I thought from cask. It is still an outstanding l’Evangile that may prove to be longer-lived than the sumptuous 1990, but perhaps not as opulently-styled. It remains one of the year’s’s top efforts. The dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by aromas of minerals, black raspberries, earth, and spice. The bottled wine seems toned down (too much fining and filtration?), compared with the pre-bottling samples, which had multiple layers of flesh and flavor dimension. High tannin in the finish and plenty of sweet fruit on the palate suggest this wine will turn out to be extra special. Could it have been even better if the filters had been junked in favor of a natural bottling? I think so, yet that being said, the wine’s ferocious tannin level cannot conceal its outstanding ripeness, purity, and depth. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020. Last tasted, 10/02.- Robert Parker Jr. (01/2003)

1997 Giacomo Borgogno Barolo Riserva
Price: $115.00    Sale $101.20
Quantity in Stock: 7

(93 Points) Medium ruby red. Beautiful aromas of strawberry, flowers and leather follow through to a full body, with supersilky tannins and a long, caressing finish. Gorgeous plum, blackberry and floral character.  Wine Spectator

Image result for 2005 Chateau Le Gay Pomerol

2005 Chateau Le Gay Pomerol
Price: $180.00    Sale Price: $150.00

(95+ Points) "The 2005 Le Gay is a massive, masculine Pomerol, very much in the style of Gazin, but showing much more minerality, abundant blue and black fruits, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and loads of tannin in a youthful, backward style, even at age 10. Give this wine at least another 5-10 years of cellaring and drink it over the following quarter-century." Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Image result for 2007 E Pira e Figli Barolo Cannubi

2007 E Pira e Figli Barolo Cannubi
Price: $165.00    Sale Price: $139.00

(92 Points) The 2007 Barolo Cannubi is round, sensual and totally inviting. It is one of the most open and rewarding 2007 Baroli I have tasted thus far. I have a preference for the more vibrant Via Nuova in this vintage, but the Cannubi is a fabulous Barolo to drink now and over the next few years. The uninterrupted warmth of the year did not allow for the fruit in this due south-facing parcel to develop its full aromatics, which is the only thing that keeps the score from going higher. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2020. - The Wine Advocate
