2005 Vintage Burgundy versus Oregon Pinot Noir Tasting at Wine Watch

We have another great Burgundy tasting coming up on Saturday May 27th and this one is a study of the 2005 vintage in both red and white.  Just for fun we will be showing 8 of these 12 wines blind tonight to see if we can tell the difference between the old world and the new world with some of the top red wines from both the Willamette Valley and Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits on the table this evening.

The 2005 vintage was outstanding for both red and white from both the Cotes de Beaune and the Cote de Nuit.  These wines have density of ripe fruit, intense color and enough structure and balance to last for another decade or more in your cellar.  The 2005 red Burgundies are blockbusters as Burgundy goes, dark in color and loaded with tannins along with a firm hand of acidity.

This vintage is the type that comes along once, maybe twice in a generation.  Some feel that the Côte de Nuits was more successful than the Côte de Beaune, but that is why we do these tastings!  We are doing serious scientific research here at the Wine Watch.

Unfortunately, greatness comes at a price. The 2005s are the most expensive red Burgundies ever released. For some trophy bottles, it seems that people are willing to pay almost anything. Even village wines are selling for upward of $100 and, in some cases, $200.   The “Blue Chip” wines have gone up exponentially from 2005 but some of the other wines are still an incredible value considering their limited production and we have an incredible offering along with this invite with everything from the outstanding 2005 vintage from Burgundy on sale and most of these great wines on  this offering are at the best price in the world!

We will be hosting this tasting at the new Wine Watch Wine Bar and Toni has prepared a special meal for this event to complement the wines.  This is a sit down pre-poured event and is limited to 16 tasters.  The fee for this event is $139.00 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com

 Price: $95.00    Your Price: $83.60
Quantity in Stock: 23

91(+?) points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Aromas and flavors of pear, lemon cream, vanilla and white flowers; this couldn't be anything but Chassagne-Montrachet. Sweet, silky, round and full; the fattest and most complex 2005 here to this point. Very suave and elegant wine with a broad, mouthcoating finish but no undue impression of weight. The crop level here was 45 hectoliters per hectare, noted Colin." (Sep/Oct 07)

(94 Points)  "Lean and refined, packing a lot of peach, flower, citrus and toast aromas and flavors into a lithe frame. Already harmonious and complex, this will get better and better over the next decade. Has fine length and minerality. Best from 2009 through 2020. 125 cases made." Wine Spectator

(88-91 Points) "from 11 different parcels scattered about Puligny with an overall average vine age of approximately 35 years – aged in 15% new oak). An exceptionally fresh nose that is at once ripe and elegant leads to delicious, intense and beautifully intense flavors blessed with ample mid-palate fat that buffers the firm acid spine, all wrapped in a pain grillé and citrus-infused finish. Excellent potential here for its level" (Burghound 01/07) a Key Buy from Allen Meadows:

(94 points) A ripe and slightly phenolic (think olive oil) nose is composed of mostly green fruit and floral aromas that are airy, pure and lightly spiced. There is fine intensity to the rich yet precise and penetrating medium full flavors that are blessed with terrific acid/fruit balance and huge length. This is really a lovely wine that is presently still on the way up in magnum format even though with some aeration it could be enjoyed now. (6/2015) Allen Meadows - Burghound

The historic Domaine Bertagna once belonged to the Cistercian monks, famous for founding the Clos de Vougeot in the 13th century. The estate’s cellars and vineyards are still located in the heart of the village nearby the Château and its ancient Chapter House, but the winery is owned since 1985 by the world-renowned Reh family and managed by Eva Reh-Siddle. With 18 wonderfully diverse appellations across the region, 12 of which are Premier and Grand crus, Bertagna is among the top ranking Domaines in Burgundy. A desire for perfection and emphasis on quality, coupled with significant investments in technology and vineyard management, result in some of the region’s most compelling wines. Domaine Bertagna is perhaps best known for its elegant, silky red wines, but it also produces one of the world’s rarest white wines – Vougeot 1er Cru Blanc “Les Cras” from the Côtes de Nuits.

2005 Louis Latour Chambertin Cuvee Heritiers Latour Grand Cru
Price: $195.00    Your Price: $171.60
Quantity in Stock: 12

This wine has complex aromas of smoke, game and also hints of licorice and berries. On the palate, it evolves toward notes of mixed berries and underbrush, with great aromatic persistence on the finish.

The family-run company of Maison Louis Latour is one of the most highly-respected négociant-éléveurs in Burgundy. Renowned throughout the world for the quality of its red and white wines, the company has built a reputation for tradition and innovation. This Domaine has the largest Grand Cru property in the Cote d'Or with a total of 28,63 hectares (71,58 acres) . The vineyards extend from Chambertin in the north to Chevalier-Montrachet in the south and are solely planted with the two noble grape varieties ; Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. All of the grapes from the vineyards are vinified and aged in the attractive cuverie of Château Corton Grancey in Aloxe-Corton. The winery was the first purpose-built cuverie in France and remains the oldest still-functioning. A unique rail-way system with elevators allows the entire wine-making process to be achieved by the use of gravity. This eliminates the threat of oxidation from unnecessary pumping of the must. Since 1985 Louis Latour has been selling the wines of its own vineyards under the name Domaine Louis Latour.

Image result for 2005 Mommessin Clos De Tart Grand Cru

2005 Mommessin Clos De Tart Grand Cru
Price: $700.00    Sale Price: $475.00

(94 Points) Sylvain Pithiot and his team “ whom I did not have a chance to visit in person “ scored an impressive success with this venerable Mommessin monopole. For a Burgundy of over 14% alcohol, the 2005 Clos de Tart exhibits remarkably cool aromas of blueberry, greenhouse vegetation and flowers, smoked meats, and sea breeze. Nor does its silken-textured, blue- and black-fruited palate impression, while voluminous, evince any heat. Juicy in fruit, savory, saline, and stony throughout, this wine finishes with a lasting impression of concentrated fresh blueberry and blackberry, along with stony, alkaline minerality and black pepper-dusted smoked duck. Ruby-red. Ripe, gamey dark berry scents, with hints of aged beef, licorice and lavender. Rich cassis and cherry flavors show very good sweetness and are deepened by candied licorice and sweet mocha. Impressively lush and creamy on the finish, which features a bright raspberry note. (JR) (6/2007) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

(90 points) "An authoritative, meaty nose sets off this dense, rather tannic Pinot Noir. A firmly built wine that suggests layered fruit, still young, but tightly packed. Hints of rock and herb lie within, all waiting for some additional hours of breathing time and/or years of bottle age to pass." (07/07) And from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Dark red. Sexy oak spice-accented raspberry and kirsch aromas are enlivened by zesty minerality. Supple, fleshy red berry flavors are deepened by a hint of tobacco and given firmness by moderate tannins. The focused finish echoes the tobacco note. This is already complex and drinking well." (May/June 07)  Wine Enthusiast

(93 points) "Lithe, supple and refined, this is truly elegant stuff, letting its complex raspberry, cherry and exotic spice flavors whoosh across the palate, finishing expressively and in fine balance. Best from 2009 through 2015." (10/2008) The Wine Spectator

Quantity in Stock: 2

(94-95 Points) The 2005 Richebourg suggests lightly cooked cherry, lilies, and vanilla-chocolate pot de creme, coming onto the palate with a gentle wave of creamy fruit, almost shockingly open-knit and youthfully generous. Low-toned richness of salted beef broth and a hint of wet stone add hints of gravitas, but despite ample (refined) tannins, there is nothing to restrain a veritable gushing of ripe, juicy, sweet finishing fruit. This might close up for a time, but these early indications suggest one ought to revisit it in 3-5 years and expect it to offer much earlier enjoyment than the Grands-Echezeaux or Romanee-St.-Vivant.  Wine Advocate #170, Apr 2007

2005 Domaine de La Romanee Conti La Tache Grand Cru
Price: $5900.00    Sale Price: $4250.00
Quantity in Stock: 1

(99 points) There really is not all that much difference between the way this bottle showed and my original review from late 2007 other than the nose of this most recent experience is notably less exuberant. However it remains just as kaleidoscopic and dazzling with its array of red and black cherry, cassis, plum and subtle earth notes replete with beguiling Asian spice cabinet aromas and essence of rose petals. The intense, powerful and breathtakingly concentrated flavors possess a taut muscularity before culminating in a palate coating finish of simply huge length. Not surprisingly, this is still structured to the point of being chewy yet it is never rustic or coarse because the gorgeously detailed palate impression is buffered by buckets of dry extract. As readers know, I often use the word Zen to describe the kind of inner harmony of a great vintage of Romanée-Conti but rarely with La Tâche yet in 2005, the LT has this element of inner calm and grace as well. In sum, I remain confident that this huge but utterly classy and stylish wine will go down as one of the all-time great LT's. (1/2012) Allen Meadows - Burghound

Price: $995.00    Your Price: $875.60
Quantity in Stock: 9

(92 Points) Insiders have long known that one of the treasures of the Leroy portfolio is the Savigny Les Beaune-Les Narbantons. Consistently the finest wine made in that appellation, it achieves grand cru quality because of its extraordinary richness and multidimensional character. The 1990 is awesome. The forceful bouquet, which is just beginning to form, soars from the glass, offering up aromas of minerals, toasty oak, and gobs of black fruit. In the mouth, there is magnificent richness, medium to full-body, and a layered, multi-dimensional, chewy texture that goes on and on. The moderate tannins are nearly obscured by the wine's sweet concentration of fruit.  Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

2005 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts
Price: $1195.00    Your Price: $1051.60
Quantity in Stock: 7

(93-96 Points) Tasting note: A step up in elegance and refinement with strikingly pure and airy ripe black fruit aromas redolent of the classic Asian spices that certainly can be found on the detailed, balanced and minerally flavors that are more refined and less robust than the Brulées yet the focus, harmony and transparency are truly stunning. This is reference standard quality and it's entirely possible that this will be the best Leroy Beaux Monts ever made. This is definitely one of those 'wow' wines. Highly recommended. BH Tasted: Jan 01, 2007 Score: 93-96 Drink: 2017+ Comments: Don't miss! Outstanding, Issue #25

2005 Domaine Michel Gaunoux Corton Renardes Grand Cru
Price: $135.00    Your Price: $118.80
Quantity in Stock: 12

(94 Points) This is less elegant but more complex still than the '05 Grand Epenots with very ripe notes of plum and dark berry fruit along with the classic animale undertones. The big-bodied flavors possess the same highly sophisticated mouth feel with excellent mid-palate concentration as well as an abundance of extract that largely, if not completely, buffers the almost chewy but not rustic finish. There is an opulence to this wine but make no mistake, this is a very serious wine that is unapologetically built to age."  Burghound

2005 Mommessin Clos Du Tart Grand Cru Magnum
Price: $1596.00    Your Price: $1404.48

(94 Points) Sylvain Pithiot and his team – whom I did not have a chance to visit in person – scored an impressive success with this venerable Mommessin monopole. For a Burgundy of over 14% alcohol, the 2005 Clos de Tart exhibits remarkably “cool†aromas of blueberry, greenhouse vegetation and flowers, smoked meats, and sea breeze. (92-95 Points) "(five of the eight barrels come from very old vines planted next to Mazis-Chambertin) Moderately saturated red-ruby. Knockout nose of red cherry, faded rose, minerals, brown spices and red licorice. Perfumed and sharply delineated, with superb inner-mouth lift and delicacy. The potential alcohol here was 14.2% but there's no sense of excess weight. This really stains the palate on the back, with the tannins arriving late. Made entirely from tiny berries, notes Girardin. Offers great potential and is likely to evolve in bottle for a long time." (International Wine Cellar) from Steve Tanzer
