“Someone said drink the water, but I will drink the wine / Someone said take a poor man, the rich don’t have a dime / Go fool yourself, if you will, I just haven’t got the time / I’ll give you back your water, and I will take the wine.”

Water and wine are the only two things that I drink for the most part and hey why do we need water at all wine is 80-85% water!!

After the success of the last few week’s “Happy Hour” tastings, we have decided to carry on this casual event over the summer and this tasting is a belly up to the bar, hang out with your friends and the food is casual, this is not a sit-down dinner- a true “Happy Hour” style event… but with GREAT wines.  Tonight, we have two wineries that will have to showcase some great Santa Rita Hills Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Gambal and Work as well as a line-up of Napa Valley wines from ACRE winery.

This tasting starts at 6pm and chef Toni will be making some appetizers to accompany the tasting wines.  The fee for this tasting is $55 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com

Gambal and Work

GAMBAL-WORK is the creation of four men who believe that great wine is made by following a seamless line from the vineyard to the bottle. This is easy in theory but requires discipline and vigor to see and hear a myriad of small details throughout the entire process.  It is a journey that begins with the soil and vines, consummating nearly two years later with bottling.

Alex Gambal and Peter Work arrived at this, their second professions, via circuitous routes. Alex, an American, discovered Burgundy in 1993 and since has developed an estate of thirty acres from Chassagne-Montrachet to Gevrey-Chambertin. Peter, a Dane, found Santa Barbara in 2001 and since has carefully cultivated an estate of nineteen acres in the Sta. Rita Hills.

Both Alex and Peter are passionate about Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the two historic varieties of Burgundy and the Santa Rita Hills. They also share a dedication to bio-dynamical cultivation.

(93 points) A big, creamy white, offering a luscious mix of dried apricot, apple tart and glazed pear flavors that feature a backbone of glistening acidity. Oily richness shows on the broad finish. Drink now through 2024. ~K.M.  Wine Spectator - 150 cases made

2018 Gambal Work Pinot Noir Francesca Santa Rita Hills
Price: $64.50   Your Price: $56.76      Quantity in Stock: 120

2018 Francesca’s nose is clean as fresh ripe raspberries jump from the glass. It is of medium weight in the mouth and reminds Alex of a 1er Cru from Beaune, such as a Clos des Mouches or a Vignes Franches. Its distinct mineral mouth feel, not heavy nor light, has the texture one finds in wines grown in the limestone of Burgundy. It will be at its best in 2-4 years.

2018 Gambal Work Pinot Noir Bentrock Vineyard Santa Rita Hills
Price: $64.50   Your Price: $56.76      Quantity in Stock: 119

2018 Bentrock has the rich nose of the Cote de Nuits with the black briary fruit one finds in the wines of Morey-St. Denis and the 1er Crus on the north side of Gevrey-Chambertin such as Combe au Moine and Les Cazetiers. Its mouth feel, really the texture of the wine, is complex and sophisticated giving the wine a long finish. It will be at its best in 4-6 years.

Our Story — Acre Wines

Welcome to the world of Acre and One Acre wines!  It all started with a single acre vineyard planted by co-founder Dave Becker in 2002. Fulfilling a lifelong dream, we purchased the winery from the founders in 2017 and brought on veteran winemaker, Richard Bruno, and together, we are honored to continue the legacy of producing highly acclaimed, handcrafted Acre and One Acre wines from celebrated vineyards in the Napa Valley.

The Acre and One Acre story begins in 2002 with just one acre of Cabernet Sauvignon planted and nurtured to maturity solely by founder, Dave Becker, at his family home in the Oak Knoll region of the Napa Valley.  Dave’s one acre Cabernet vineyard soon led to production from two more one acre plantings — Oak Knoll Zinfandel from his neighbor’s vineyard, and Yountville Cabernet, which Dave planted with identical Bordeaux clones as those in his home vineyard, allowing for the perfect vineyard comparison with identical varietal, clones, spacing, and orientation, and location being the only variable.

In 2008, the 2005 One Acre Cabernet Sauvignon bested 500 entries to win top honors in a prestigious international wine competition in Hong Kong, Soon thereafter, Dave joined forces with close friend and 30-year wine industry veteran, co-founder Bob Babbe, to bring the limited production One Acre experience to a much wider audience with the launch of Acre wines.

Today, Acre and One Acre wines continue to beautifully express the unique characteristics that define Napa Valley and are sourced from grapes from preeminent, family-owned estate vineyards in the valley, all of which adhere to sustainable farming practices.  We choose these vineyards because of the exceptional terroir, vineyard management, and resulting quality of the fruit, which set the stage for what you taste in the bottle.  With Acre and One Acre wines, we are able to showcase the best of what Napa Valley has to offer through invaluable partnerships with our growers and in consultation with well-known winemaker, Richard Bruno.

2018 Acre Merlot Napa Valley
Price: $42.00   Your Price: $36.96      Quantity in Stock: 12

The 2018 Acre Merlot is a deep purple-tinged ruby in color. From the first pour, it opens up with enticingly bold aromas of summer fruit, including black cherries, ripe strawberries, and dark plums, which carry over subtly in the mouth. On the palate, the bright acidity and textured tannins support layers of spice, dried herbs, cocoa beans, leather, and cedar, which lead to a lengthy, complex finish that takes its time to unfold. While the 2018 Merlot drinks beautifully in its youth, the robust structure also makes it a perfect candidate for cellaring.

2016 Acre Cabernet Sauvignon Napa
Price: $52.50   Your Price: $46.20      Quantity in Stock: 12

The 2016 Acre Cabernet Sauvignon is another classic representation of Napa Valley Cabernet with its deep ruby color to the immediately accessible scents of white pepper, clove, and plum- spice cake, which continue on the palate and lead to abundant black fruit notes of black cherry, black currant, blackberry, and boysenberry. Full-bodied and rich with powerful structure and bright tannins, elements of crème de cassis, cola, and dried herbs unfold on the long and decadent finish. Stunning right out of the gate but will also age beautifully for years to come.
