We have made a lot of new friends on our trip to New Zealand but we knew the wines of Jules Taylor before we left on our journey across the big pond.  Jules Taylor is one of the true local success stories as she worked with Kim Crawford when he was blowing up and then she moved on to work with Constellation Brands after Kim sold his label to the world’s largest wine entity before starting her own label in 2001.

Jules grew up in the region and through her work with Kim and Constellation she got to know many of the top growers in Marlborough.  So when she released her first wines with the 2006 vintage, they quickly sold out and she was able to scale the operation over the course of a decade to where today they are producing around 50,000 cases and Jules owns no vines of her own.  This is one of the hardest things to do for a small producer and can be difficult to maintain high quality if you don’t have excellent grower relations and Jules seems to have a good handle on where the best grapes are.

We had a great afternoon with Jules significant other George Elworty on our recent trip to New Zealand and had a chance to visit some of their vineyard sites that go into these excellent wines (the pictures below are from our visit to one of the vineyard sites Jules buys from in Marlborough).  That is why we go on these trips to “Kiss the dirt”.  There is still time to come with us to South Africa, check out the next wine country vacation itinerary on our web page under the February 2017 calendar of events!

Join us as we welcome Jules to South Florida for a special wine dinner at one of our favorite restaurants in Fort Lauderdale, Market 17 on Thursday, September 28th at 7pm.

Jules Taylor Gruner Veltliner Marlborough 2014
Price: $21.50 Sale $18.48

The best way to describe Grüner Veltliner is that it’s a cool climate wine somewhere between an aromatic white and a chardonnay. One of the reasons that we’re making it is to stretch our wings, to see if there is life after Sauvignon Blanc. The initial results suggest that there might be.

First Course
Potato Gnocchi with Goose Sausage

Jules Taylor Chardonnay Marlborough 2013
Price: $21.50 Sale $18.48
This fragrant chardonnay exhibits stonefruit and butterscotch aromas layered over spicy notes with a hint of smoky oak. The partial wild and malolactic fermentations along with the extended lees maturation in barrel have added complexity and texture to the wine. The palate is smooth and round with lovely balance of minerality and well refined acid.

Jules Taylor Pinot Gris Marlborough 2015
Price: $21.50 Sale $18.48
This is a lovely textural Pinot Gris with lucious pear and stonefruit flavours, layered over subtle creamy and nutty characters derived from the partial wild fermentation and yeast lees ageing. The secondary characters impart a richness and complexity that carries through to a lingering dry finish.

Jules Taylor Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough 2015

This Sauvignon Blanc captures the true essence of Marlborough. This wine is pale lime in color. Aromas leap out of the glass in an explosion of passionfruit, grapefruit, white fleshed nectarines and notes of nettle and jalapeno pepper. This is a beautifully vibrant and juicy Sauvignon Blanc made in the quintessentially Marlborough style. The palate shows concentrated flavours of citrus, passionfruit, lemongrass & jalapeno peppers. It has a nice texture with a firm backbone of juicy acidity.

2014 Jules Taylor Sauvignon Blanc OTQ Marlborough image

Jules Taylor Sauvignon Blanc OTQ 2014
Price: $27.00 Sale $23.76

This wine is indulgence, Jules's little secret. On the quiet, she kept aside pockets of fruit showing special promise. Hand-picked, whole cluster pressed and wild fermented in old barrels, a very special wine has emerged. The sort to which choirs of angels would sing Hallelujah except we've asked them not to. Because it's a secret.

This wine is pale green-gold in color. Intriguing fusion of gooseberry, honeysuckle and fresh peaches, perfectly overlayed on nutty caramel notes. Showing more of it's Sauvignon Blanc heritage on the palate, this wine is loaded with nectarine, mandarin and fresh peach flavors, beautifully laced with notes of pecan and honey.

Third Course

Slow Roasted Duck Breast & Duck Leg Confit
Toasted Farro, Local Mushrooms,
Roasted Rainbow Carrots, Dehydrated Olives,
