"Drinking is like pouring smiles on your brain."

Chris Hardwick

At one-time Pinot Noir was thought to be the world's most finicky grape varietal and that it would only grow in a few places where it could turn out a world class wine.  Today, we can find excellent examples of the Pinot Noir varietal from all over the wine world; Germany, Austria, Australia, Argentina, Chile, Tasmania, New Zealand, South Africa, California, Oregon and of course the mother land for this varietal Burgundy, France.

Hartford Court Winery has been known for their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from California for quite some time now and recently the Jackson family bought the Copain label giving them an arsenal of California’s top vineyard sources.

Tonight, Wine Watch will showcase the several single vineyard wines from Hartford Court Winery and Copain Winery featuring different regions of the California with the Brand ambassador from the winery.  We also have one of the best prices in the country on the Russian River bottlings from Hartford Court Winery and I have included the interview with Don Hartford on Wine Watch TV.

This is a seated tasting and the fee for this event is $75 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

2011 Hartford Court Chardonnay Stone Cote Vineyard Russian River
Price: $67.50 Your Price: $59.40        Quantity in Stock: 1

The Stone Côte Vineyard is a small vineyard block within the well-known Durell Vineyard, which sits upon an ancient riverbed at the southern end of the Sonoma Coast AVA. The vineyard’s topography has been shaped by the river’s flow through volcanic and sedimentary rock on its way to the San Pablo Bay. Tumbled and water-worn river rocks now litter the landscape, and very little topsoil remains. The nutritionally challenged soils force the vines to search deeply for nutrients and water, and the stressed vines yield very small clusters with intense varietal flavors.

Climatically, this vineyard site is characterized by relatively cool daytime temperatures and maritime breezes, which marry with the low-fertility soils to create an ideal site for growing Chardonnay. The wine’s flinty aromas and mineral-laden finish are a reflection of this vineyard’s terroir.2011: "Outstanding" 91-92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
2011: "Outstanding" 90-92 points Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate

Finish 50+     KILLER

2014 Hartford Court Pinot Noir Warrior Princess Willamette Valley
Price: $75.00 Your Price: $66.00        Quantity in Stock: 2

Tasting Notes The wine has a deep ruby hue with complex aromas of Chinese five spice, sandalwood and dried rose petal; the framework of the wine’s aromatic profile is dark blueberry and blackberry. Focused aromatics are followed by complex flavors of fresh cherry, berry liqueur, violet pastille, allspice, and juniper. Fine grain tannins shape the persistent, spiced finish. Vineyard & Vintage Character The 2014 Warrior Princess Pinot Noir is our first release from the Willamette Valley and is sourced from Oregon’s renowned Zena Crown Vineyard, which is situated near the Oregon ghost town of Zena, in the hills between Eola and Amity, Oregon. Our blocks are planted to several clones, including Pommard, Dijon 667 and 777. The soils are predominantly basalt-based Jory series, which is volcanic in origin, mixed with marine sedimentary rocks and alluvial material. This soil tends to produce wines characterized by high tone blue and black fruits, with earth, allspice and tea components both in aroma and flavor. The wines have a firm tannin structure with density and weight. The wines retain good acidity because of the influence of the Van Duzer corridor, which allows cool a ernoon breezes to reach the Eola-Amity hills from the Pacific Ocean. We are excited to add this new release to our diverse lineup of Designated Vineyard wines.  92 Points - "The only 2014 tasted was the early-bottled 2014 Pinot Noir Land’s Edge Vineyards, which comes from a vineyard four miles from the Pacific Ocean. Aged in 32% new French oak, the wine displays raspberry and blueberry fruit, damp earth, fresh porcini mushrooms and plenty of minerality. Hartford Court Chardonnay Seascape Vineyard
Price: $75.00 Sale $66.00
The Seascape Vineyard Chardonnay is from one of the coldest vineyards in all of Northern California. On a ridgetop close to the town of Occidental, facing Bodega Bay in the Pacific Ocean, it is often the last to ripen – and sometimes as late as late October or November.

Hartford Court Chardonnay Sevens Bench
Price: $66.75 Sale $58.74
Intensive farming and low yields are the foundations of our Carneros Chardonnay offering. The two blocks farmed for this wine are on a bench with classic Haire clay loam soils, and on a ridge at a 200-foot elevation. This block is part of an uplifted riverbed, which allows good drainage in the traditional clay based soils of the region. The name Sevens Bench is derived from our historical name for our Carneros Pinot Noir and one of the two clones planted on our blocks: Clone 27 (Mount Eden). The other selection is old Rued clone. We are extremely proud to release this second bottling of Sevens Bench Chardonnay and hope you enjoy the wine.

Hartford Court Chardonnay 3 Jacks Vineyard
Price: $67.50 Sale $59.40

Three Jacks Vineyard is a small vineyard in the heart of the Green Valley of Russian River Valley AVA. It is farmed by the Dutton family and has a history with Hartford Family Winery, being bottled as a Designated Vineyard wine from 1999 through 2004. We are excited to bring it back into our lineup with the 2012 offering.

The vineyard is located on Graton Road next to the Dutton Shop, and is known to most as Triple JS – the name derived from the partnership of the owners – Joe, Juan, Jose and Steve. It was planted in 1995 to 4 clonal selections: old Wente, Rued, Dijon 95 and Clone 15. The name Three Jacks was coined in a barrel tasting with the 1999 vintage and has stuck ever since.

Hartford Court Chardonnay Stone Cote
Price: $67.50 Sale $59.40
The Stone Côte Vineyard is a small vineyard block within the well-known Durrell Vineyard, it sits in the path of an ancient, uplifted river bed on the flank of Sonoma Mountain within the cool Sonoma Coast AVA. Tumbled and water-worn cobblestones now litter the landscape of the vineyard, and very little topsoil remains. The nutritionally deficient soils force the vines to search for water and generate considerable stress on the vines. The stressed vines in turn yield very small clusters with intense varietal flavors.

Climatically, this vineyard site is characterized by cool daytime temperatures, high winds and cold ocean breezes. The low fertility soils and the cool temperatures unite to form an ideal site for growing Chardonnay. The wine's flinty aromas and mineral-laden finish are a reflection of the stony vineyard's location.

Hartford Court Chardonnay 4 HEARTS
Price: $47.25 Sale $41.58

Our family of four makes Four Hearts Vineyards Chardonnay almost exclusively from Tom Dehlinger’s Vineyard on Laguna Ridge in the Russian River Valley. The vineyard is planted to heirloom clones of Chardonnay and is one of the oldest plantings of Chardonnay in the Russian River – over 40 years old. In some years a small percent of grapes from the Middle Reach region of the Russian River are used in the blend to add a nuanced floral aromatic complexity.

Pinot Noir

Hartford Court Pinot Noir Fog Dance
Price: $69.00 Sale $60.72
Exuberant aromas of berries, black cherry and exotic spice aromatics are supported by bright flavors of red and black cherry, blood orange and soy. Velvety, fine grained tannins complement a long finish with subtle clove and citrus nuances.

Hartford Court Pinot Noir Jennifer
Price: $72.00 Sale $63.36
Named in honor of co-proprietor Jennifer Hartford, this wine is defined by its power, concentration of fruit, structure and an underlying elegance. A wine that is built to age, Jennifer’s proves that not all Pinot Noirs are shy, retiring, delicate souls. Jennifer’s Pinot Noir is sourced from a vineyard in the windy and very cool Sebastopol Hills subregion of the Russian River Valley AVA. Jennifer’s Pinot Noir is planted primarily to Clone 23 and is known for small berries, low yields and a high skin-to-pulp ratio. The dark color, intense black fruit aroma and flavor profile are a testament to the terroir of this site.

Hartford Court Pinot Noir LANDS EDGE
Price: $49.50 Sale $43.56

Land’s Edge Pinot Noir is sourced from vineyards located at the ‘Land’s Edge’ of the Sonoma Coast AVA. The vineyards are driven by a maritime influence, producing a small but concentrated crop of Pinot Noir that is harvested in late September through mid-October. The foggy coastal climate preserves natural acidity in the grapes and helps delineate the purity of fruit flavors and expression of the unique coastal terroir in this wine. Balanced acidity, layers of complexity and firm tannins will allow for long and graceful aging of Land’s Edge Vineyards Pinot Noir.

Hartford Court Pinot Noir SEASCAPE
Price: $75.00 Sale $66.00

Seascape Vineyard is a six-acre site on a scenic ridge-top west of the town of Occidental in the Sonoma Coast AVA. The vineyard abuts an old redwood grove and faces cascading ridges to Bodega Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The well-known Coastlands Vineyard also borders the property. Because there is no ridge between the ocean and the vineyard, Seascape is in extremely cold spot – so cold that Pinot Noir is often picked in November. This cold and foggy coastal climate preserves natural acidity in the grapes and helps delineate the purity of fruit flavors and expression of the unique coastal terroir in this wine. Balanced natural acidity also accentuates the potential for long and graceful aging of Seascape Vineyard Pinot Noirs.

Seascape Vineyard is planted primarily to Dijon selections such as 777, 114 and 115 and averages about one ton per acre, which helps to ensure thorough physiological maturity in this cool and challenging site.

Hartford Court Pinot Noir Sevens Bench
Price: $70.50 Sale $62.04

Intensive farming and low yields are the foundations of our Carneros offering. The vineyard is on a ridge at 200 foot elevation, part of an uplifted riverbed that allows good drainage in the traditional clay-based soils of the region. The name Sevens Bench is derived from the two clones planted on our block: Clones 37 (Mount Eden) and Dijon 777.

Hartford Court Pinot Noir Velvet Sisters
Price: $70.50 Sale $62.04

In the Anderson Valley of Mendocino County the local residents speak an obscure dialect of English known as Boontling, developed in the late 1800s. The "Velvet Sisters" are local historical figures who in Boontling lore became known for wearing plush velvet dresses that they had purchased on a trip to British Columbia. We call this wine "Velvet Sisters" in tribute to the Anderson Valley history and the wine's plush velvety texture.

Hartford Court Pinot Noir MARIN
Price: $69.00 Sale $60.72

This wine is sourced from a small, dry-farmed vineyard on rolling hills in an area of Marin that has been home to cattle and dairies for the last century. Today there are small vineyard sites scattered across Marin that are producing very interesting and distinct fruit.
Pure aromas of red cherries, berries, leather and Asian spice notes are supported by bright flavors of cherry cola, pomegranate and an earthy mid palate. Velvety, fine-grained tannins complement a long finish with subtle lavender and wild strawberry nuances.

Hartford Court Pinot Noir MULDUNE
Price: $69.00 Sale $60.72

In the Anderson Valley of Mendocino County the local residents speak an obscure dialect of English known as Boontling, which developed in the late 1800s. The “Muldune Trail” was a term used in Anderson Valley lore often describing the road traversing the ridge to Ukiah. There are other definitions of hitting the “Muldune Trail” that we will leave to the reader to discover! Our blocks within this estate-owned vineyard are located in the hills above Anderson Valley just below a 2,000 foot elevation, making it our highest elevation site. Planted to Dijon clones 115 and 667, we see another expression of Anderson Valley Pinot Noir that is more masculine than our Velvet Sisters bottling.
This mountain-grown wine expresses ripe fruits of the warm days and the acid balance from the cool nights. Vibrant fruit aromas of blueberry, raspberry and plum are the hallmarks of the aromatics along with a subtle cedar/cigar box note. These aromatics lead into intense flavors of berries and spice in this structured yet lively Pinot Noir.

Hartford Court Pinot Noir FAR Coast
Price: $76.50 Sale $67.32
Far Coast Vineyard consistently produces one of our boldest Pinot Noir offerings. The 2014 is no exception, with intense cherry, blackberry and cocoa aromas sharing the stage with an elegant green tea component. The mountaintop terroir gives the wine a broad, lush texture followed by black cherry and blackberry fruits. Mocha, Asian spice and silky tannins linger on the palate, giving a persistent finish that is distinctly Far Coast.

Zinfandel  - I even like the Zinfandel from Hartford Court Winery

Hartford Fanucchi-Wood Road Vineyard Zinfandel
Price: $58.50 Sale $51.48
The 100+ year old Fanucchi-Wood Road Vineyard is located on about seven acres along a slight rise off Wood Road in the Russian River Valley AVA of Sonoma County. It is dry-farmed and has been hand-tended by the Fanucchi family for over 35 years. The vineyard is head trained, but Peter Fanucchi raised the gnarled old vines from just above ground level to chest height. This modification seems to provide greater sun exposure and air circulation and to have reinvigorated the old vines, enhancing the production of high-quality, old-vine fruit.

The soils on Wood Road are sandy loam of relatively low pH and fertility. Old vines on these soils produce small Zinfandel berries with bright, concentrated cherry and blackberry fruit flavors. At optimum ripeness, the fruit makes a big, intense, long-lived Zinfandel of unique personality.

Hartford Jolene's Vineyard Zinfandel
Price: $58.50 Sale $51.48

Jolene's Vineyard takes its name from a merging of the first names of the owners of Maffei Vineyards - Joanne and Arlene. This old vine vineyard joined the Hartford Zinfandel portfolio beginning in 2004, as a single vineyard offering, and as an important component of our Russian River Valley Zinfandel blend. It is rare for an older Russian River Valley Zinfandel vineyard, such as Jolene's, to be planted almost exclusively to Zinfandel selections, with very small percentages of Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouschet and Carignan.

2016 Hartford Zinfandel Russian River Valley
Price: $38.25 Sale $33.66

The 2016 Hartford Russian River Valley Zinfandel is showing aromas of ripe plum, blackberry and black cherry which are highlighted with hints of white pepper and allspice. Blueberry, red raspberry, nutmeg and mocha flavors lead into a long, bright finish with supple tannins.
