Burgundy Wine Tasting at Cafe Maxx Wednesday, September 3, 2014 6:30 PM

These tastings at the Cafe Maxx for $35 are the best value of any event that we do. You get to try 8 different wines at the same time, pre-poured so they have a chance to open up and so you can go back through the line-up to get a second and third look at everything. This is how you learn about wine and with master chef Oliver Saucy sending out a few small courses to accompany the wines, you get a taste of Cafe Maxx and an education in wine all at the same time. A great way to spend happy hour.

Tonight we will feature wines from the greatest wine region on earth for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.   This is a pre-poured sit down tasting and is limited to 25 tasters, the fee for this tasting is $35 + Gratuity + tax for reservations call 954-523-9463.

Whites

2011 Domaine de la Cadette Bourgogne Blanc (Vezelay) Price: $25.50    Sale $22.44    Case $261

Though Vézelay is a geographic appendage of Chablis, the soils are not exactly the same. The climate here is cooler, too. Instead of the Kimmerdigian soils, the clays here range from blue and gray to red, sometimes with no clay at all but just shallow limestone. In this cooler climate, their vines enjoy great sun exposure, lending a balance between generous fruit and deep mineral structure. That the wines from Vézelay have gone largely unnoticed until recently may certainly be attributed to an underwhelming production of forgettable wines, however Domaine de la Cadette stands proudly as a beacon of change, representing the most sincere expression of their terroirs with grace and integrity.  Though they are best known for their Bourgogne Vézelay, a Chardonnay, their Bourgogne Rouge and their Melon de Bourgogne are also equally remarkable.

2011 Domaine Costal Chablis “Truffieres” Price: $34.50    Sale $30.36    Case $351.90

The Domaine Costal Chablis “Truffières” is a unique KLWM collaboration that stems from our long relationship with Bernard Raveneau.  The Chablis comes from a single vineyard site called Truffières, or truffles. We decided to use the name of the parcel on the label, which had never been done by the domaine in the past. The parcel has been worked organically for many years. Kermit and Bernard Raveneau together agree on a blend of stainless steel, foudre, and barrel vinifications. Our bottling is not filtered or cold-stabilized—a true rarity in Chablis. The combined skill of Collet and Raveneau and the excellent terroir of Truffières combine to give us a wine of extraordinary purity and finesse. There is no mistaking it – one taste and you are in Chablis territory: zesty minerality, wet stone, freshness and nervosity. And is that a hint of black truffle in the bouquet? Tasting the three vintages that have resulted from this collaboration, we all noticed an “elusive” suggestion of divine black truffles. Maybe that is why the vineyard parcel has been called “Truffières” for so long.

2011 Bret Brothers Domaine La Soufrandiere, Pouilly Vinzelles "Les Quarts     Price: $53.75    Sale $47.30    Case $549.00

Why not walk, listen and smell ? You are in the middle of the ploughed vines of la Soufrandière in Pouilly-Vinzelles Climat « Les Quarts », this terroir we think is one of the best in Burgundy, because we are deeply in love with it, but it could be that we have deep conviction. The earth here is soft, aerated, smelling of liquorice. It is alive. The Terroir is present, simply, surely. The climat « Les Quarts » is undoubtedly the best of appellation Pouilly-Vinzelles.

The almost magic position of the South-East facing 40 to 68 year-old vines of Chardonnay here, plus the living clay and limestone soil (Bajocian with a lot of siliceous crystals) give birth to wines for the long term. A great Burgundy wine : a citrussy mineral nose and balance, complexity and richness in the mouth.

2009 Maison Deux Montille Meursault Poruzuts      Price: $104.75    Sale $92.18    Case $1069

A very forward and ripe wine with a good bit of ripe tree fruit, apples and pears with notes of vanilla bean spice and distinct minerality, limestone, flinty mineral notes, nice complexity on the nose. This wine has a nice core of ripe tree fruits with a lush creamy texture on the tongue and lemon zest citrus on the finish nice balance and length with tongue tingly minerality, long complex finish. Finish 45+ Excellent +

Reds

2012 Domaine Gruhier Epineuil Rouge      Price: $27.75    Sale $24.42    Case $284

Bourgogne Epineuil is the title given to the red, white and rose Bourgogne wines produced in the commune of Epineuil, in the far north of Burgundy. Epineuil is just a short distance east of Chablis and is quite removed from the core of Burgundy's wine-growing area in Beaune, 60 miles (100km) to the south-east.

2011 Domaine Pierre Guillemot Savigny Les Beaune 1er Cru “Aux Serpentieres” Price: $44.00    Sale $38.72    Case $449

Domaine Pierre Guillemot produces some of the best wines in one of the last remaining undervalued areas of Burgundy: Savigny-lès-Beaune. The wines are well known and held in high esteem in both the U.S. and their native France.

2011 Bruno Colin Chassagne Montrachet Rouge VV Price: $42.50    Sale $37.40    Case $434

Michel Colin was the third generation in his family to grow grapes in Burgundy within the prestigious Côte de Beaune. When he retired in 2003, he handed the property over to his sons, Philippe and Bruno, who split the holdings between them to bottle under separate labels.  With the help of his wife, Stéphanie, Bruno farms eight hectares of land, in thirty different parcels scattered over five communes, with sometimes as little as just a few rows per parcel. To farm under these circumstances is quintessentially Burgundian, where the old Napoleonic codes of inheritance (evolved from Roman law) divide property equally among offspring. Parcels farmed by any one family continue to get smaller and smaller as they are distributed among relatives.

He bottles Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Saint-Aubin, Santenay, and Maranges. In the old family winery in the center of the village of Chassagne-Montrachet, he vinifies nineteen cuvées separately, twelve of which are premier cru! He uses traditional vinification methods and ages his wines anywhere from twelve to eighteen months in barrel, though he tends to vinify each parcel in a similar fashion. Bruno’s style shows beautiful balance, both aromatically and texturally, while showcasing the delicate minerality and nuanced complexity of each vineyard.

2009 Ch Puligny Nuit St Georges 1er Cru Clos des Grandes Vignes      Price: $81.75    Sale $71.94    Case $834

The Clos des Grandes Vignes 1er Cru cuvée comes from exclusivley old vines. It shows a bright deep red color, a complex bouquet of crushed red berries and exotic spices, with excellent structure, this is an exciting Nuits-St-Georges wine.
