“It is the wine that leads me on,
the wild wine that sets the wisest man to sing at the top of his lungs,
laugh like a fool – it drives the man to dancing...
it even tempts him to blurt out stories better never told.”
? Homer, The Odyssey
You know when you see a stretch like this on our calendar of event where there are no events for a few weeks that I am out of town! We has a great start to 2017 with several “Once in a Lifetime” Bordeaux tastings and when I get back we have two more to complete our study with a super 1990’s tasting and this tasting with one of the top winemakers in Bordeaux Jean-Phillipe Janoueix.
The 2015 vintage is currently being offered for sale in Bordeaux and this is the first vintage to get any real action on futures since 2010. After four years of lackluster scores from publications like the Wine Advocate and the Wine Spectator this can only mean that prices on Bordeaux are coming down- this is good news for consumers!! But there are always great values to be found in Bordeaux and one of the best small producers in Bordeaux is Jean-Philippe Janoueix.
Jean-Philippe Janoueix is one of the top winemakers in Bordeaux today and his family has been in the wine business for over 100 years.
His name is on La Confession, La Croix St-Georges, 20 Mille De Janoueix, Cap Saint Georges, Sacre Coeur and one of the greatest values in all of Bordeaux- Croix Mouton. They all get the 90+ Point scores and offer incredible value considering some of the ultra-expensive wines that they compete with.
Jean-Philippe Janoueix is a perfectionist and makes a strict selection meaning no green, unripe grapes are allowed into the final mix. Which means throwing out grapes that are flawed, which is like taking euros and tossing them into the garbage.
Chateau Croix Mouton is a wine that will exceed your taste buds and will not empty your wallet. It comes from a vineyard west of Saint-Emilion, on the right bank in Bordeaux. The cepage is 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc with a small amount of Petit Verdot. There are only a few thousand cases of this wine produced in any vintage.
We will also be sampling La Confession, La Croix St-Georges, 20 Mille De Janoueix, Cap Saint Georges and Sacre Coeur with Jean-Philippe along with a few tasty treats from Wine Watch caterings chef Toni Lampasone. The fee for this event is $45 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com

Chateau Croix Mouton Bordeaux Superior 2012
Price: $16.50 Sale $14.52 Case $169
The 2012 exhibits a deep ruby/blue/purple color along with attractive notes of toast, minerals and dark berry fruit. Chateau Croix Mouton Bordeaux Supérieur 2015
Price: $16.50 Sale $14.52 Case $169
20 Mille De Janoueix Bordeaux Supérieur 2010
Price: $42.00 Sale $36.96 Case $429
The 1.4 hectare plot that is used to make this 20 Mille Bordeaux Superieur vineyard is located in the larger vineyard of Chateau Croix Mouton. This plot is planted to 100% Merlot on Riparia rootstock. The name 20 Mille refers to the density of vines here as there are 20,000 vines per hectare planted in this plot. The vines are very closely packed the minimal distance between each vine is only 80 centimeters. The rows are packed even tighter, each row is only separated by a distance of 60 centimeters! This close planting makes it very difficult to farm, but the end result is naturally lower yields. The terroir of 20 Mille plot is clay, limestone and rocky soils.
Chateau Cap Saint Georges St. Georges St. Emilion 2014
Price: $24.50 Sale $21.56 Case $250
Château Cap Saint George is a 19 hectares winery owned by Jean Philippe Janoueix and divided into two wines: Château Cap Saint George and Château Cap d’Or (second wine). Those two wines belong to Saint-Georges Saint-Emilion, the tiniest AOC in Bordeaux and also the scarcest of the satellites of Saint-Emilion. In total, only 20 owners are lucky enough to cultivate vines on the 190 hectares of this appellation. In 2014, Jean Philippe Janoueix created the Château Cap Saint George on a beautiful terroir made of clay and chalk. Merlot particularly flourishes on clayey soils, responsible for the great structure, the softness and the quality of the wines. On the other side, a great range of aromas and characteristics such as red forest fruit, delicate spices and very fine tannins come from the Cabernet Franc. The underground chalk echoes to those flavors and underline them with a minty freshness, typical from those terroirs. With such a character and such a quality, the two wines from Cap Saint George join the Pomerol and Saint Emilion Grand Cru from Jean Philippe Janoueix without ever seeming out of place.
Chateau La Confession St. Emilion 2011
Price: $45.00 Sale $39.60 Case $459
(91 Points) "Another terrific effort from Jean-Philippe Janoueix, this beautiful 2011 boasts a dense purple color as well as a big, sweet bouquet of smoky barbecue, red and black fruits, and subtle background oak. Rich, full-bodied and textured, there is not a hard edge to be found in this plush, well-endowed St.-Emilion. Enjoy it over the next decade." The Wine Advocate
Chateau La Confession St. Emilion 2014
Price: $35.00 Sale $30.80 Case $357
Chateau Sacre Coeur Pomerol 2014
Price: $35.00 Sale $30.80 Case $357
This wine is produced from a small, 1.5 hectare vineyard which is situated not far from Chateau Beauregard and Clos du Clocher. The terroir here consists of gravel and sandy soils. The vineyard is planted to 100%, old vine Merlot at a vine density of 6,666 vines per hectare. The vines are an average age of 35 years old. The vineyard management is done using 100%, organic farming techniques.
The vinification of Sacre Coeur takes place in cement vats at Chateau La Croix in Pomerol. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French, oak barrels. The wine is aged in 100%, new, French oak barrels for 17 to 18 months, depending on the character and quality of the vintages. The wine is aged on its fine lees for 6 months to give the wine added richness and texture.
Chateau La Croix Saint Georges Pomerol 2014
Price: $53.00 Sale $46.64 Case $541
Located behind a gate built in the 18th century, on the Petrus' road, visitors can view Château La Croix Saint-Georges, which has been completely restored. On one of the façade of the cellars, a sculpture representing Saint-Georges fighting from horseback reminds that this domain used to belong to the chivalrous order of the charitable of Saint-Jean-de-Jerusalem.
The vineyard of the Château La Croix Saint-Georges is located on the graves of the high terrace, between Vieux Château Certan, Petit Village and Le Pin. The soils here are clayed-gravelly and the wine is a blend of 95% of Merlot, for the roundness, the width and the fruit aromas, and 5% of Cabernet franc, for the elegance and structure. Wine made and grown by Jean-Philippe Janoueix, Château La Croix Saint Georges' wine stands out by its exceptional mellowness and its great fineness.

A bit about Chateau Croix Mouton from: www.thewinecellarinsider.com
“Previously known as Chateau Mouton, Croix Mouton has a long history in the Bordeaux region. The property was written about in the 1881 Ferret edition, next to many well-known Bordeaux wine producers of the time. However, the estate has a much longer history dating back to the ancient Romans who planted vines on the property. The Gallo-Romains remains found in its soil are proof of an ancient Bordeaux wine producing past.
Chateau Croix Mouton was purchased by Jean-Philippe Janoueix in 1997. At the time of the purchase, the estate and vineyards were in poor condition, as the previous owner had abandoned the vineyards. At first, Jean Philippe Janoueix wanted to sell the wines under the original name of Chateau Mouton. A lawsuit was filed by Chateau Mouton Rothschild and the property changed their name to Croix Mouton. Starting in 1998, extensive renovations on all the wine making facilities and work in the vineyards began taking place.
Chateau Croix-Mouton is a serious candidate for one of the best Bordeaux wine value producers today. The Chateau is located not far from the Fronsac appellation, close to the Dordogne river, next to Lugon. The special architecture of the buildings at Croix Mouton are a unique feature of the estate, with its 17th century style.
The 19 hectare Bordeaux Superieur vineyard has a terroir of clay, alluvial and limestone soils. The vineyard is planted to 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc . They have old vines. On average, the vines are a surprising 43 years of age! Those old vines add a lot of concentration and complexity to the wine. When you factor how labor intensive this wine is to produce, it’s easy to see why this is such a good Bordeaux value wine.
To produce the wine of Croix Mouton, the grapes are whole berry fermented in oak vats. Malolactic fermentation takes place in 50% new, French barrels. The wine of Croix Mouton is aged in 50% new, French oak barrels for 9 months before bottling. On average, close to 12,500 cases are produced each year. There is a second wine , Reserve du Croix Mouton. Starting in 2005, a high end cuvee, from 1.4 hectares of vines planted at 20,000 vines per hectare was produced by Jean Philippe Janoueix from the vineyards of Croix Mouton, 20 Mille.”
