"At least once a day you should do something purely for enjoyment, and wine is my way of relaxing." - Young Uck Kim, Wine Collector

We try to do things that are relaxing more than once a day here at the Wine Watch… but that's just us...

This is our annual Brunello event to showcase the newest releases from Italy's most famous wine region and the greatest expression of Sangiovese on the Earth.

These wines are by law released after 5 years and the new vintage 2016 is just starting to reach the US shores.  The Riservas are only made in excellent vintages and they are held back for 6 years before release and the 2015 vintage Brunello di Montalcino Riserva are just now hitting the shelves but like the 2016 vintage the 2015 vintage was excellent as well making this tasting even more exciting as we will be tasting 2015 Riserva in addition to the normal!

Brunello di Montalcino is one of the greatest wines of Italy and some would argue that it is one of the greatest wines on the planet.  This is one of the only places that produces compelling examples of the Sangiovese grape in 100% varietal form.

This will be our first comprehensive tasting with the newly released 2016 vintage wines.  This new release is being met with stellar reviews by the press and we are buying everything that comes in from this highly anticipated vintage.

Although Brunello di Montalcino is one of the latest releases of all the world’s cellar worthy wines, in great vintage like 2016 these wines will need another 10+ years in your cellar before they reach their peak years of drinking.  That is why god made vintages like 2014, these wines are already showing nicely, and you can drink them while you hold on to your 2016, 2015, 2013, 2012, and 2010 vintages- in great vintages like these you need at least 10 years in the cellar after release.

Join us as you will be some of the first to taste the newest release of the world’s greatest Sangiovese on Earth and chef Toni Lampasone will be serving a special five course tasting menu to accompany the tasting wines.  The fee for this tasting which includes dinner is $225 + tax for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

2016 Brunello di Montalcino
Another Outstanding Vintage in Tuscany!
Saturday, April 17th
7:30pm

2016 Altesino Brunello Di Montalcino DOCG
Price: $65.00       Your Price: $57.20            Quantity in Stock: 22
(95 Points) Bold cherry, dried raspberry and myrtle add to the intensity and the brightness of the bouquet. The Altesino 2016 Brunello di Montalcino displays a lively and fruit-forward ensemble with an infectious and cheerful sense of energy. This is a tonic and crisp expression of Sangiovese with lifted berry aromas backed by subtle spice, tar and licorice gained over two years of barrel aging. -Robertparker.com

2016 Canalicchio Di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino
Price: $136.50    Your Price: $120.12          Quantity in Stock: 59
(95 points) The Canalicchio di Sopra 2016 Brunello di Montalcino shows balance and symmetry with that difficult twofold delivery of power and elegance. This terrific new release shows dark fruit and tart cherry, but then unwinds slowly to reveal light spice, toasted nut, blue flower and crushed limestone. The wine affords a genuine sense of place with roots in the northern half of the appellation where the light is whiter and the nights are cooler. That brilliant luminosity appears in the pure quality of fruit and the sharp focus of the mouthfeel, driven by balanced tannins and acidity. The sensation it gives is compact and long, without too much extra volume or padding. This wine is like a contoured, chiseled and carefully polished marble statue that you would see in a Renaissance church. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2016 Costanti Brunello di Montalcino DOCG
Price: $114.00    Your Price: $100.32          Quantity in Stock: 47
(94 Points) - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Conti Costanti 2016 Brunello di Montalcino shows warm fruit layering with cherry, wild raspberry and plum. You might also notice some touches of sweetness with candied orange skin and lavender honey. At the back of it all, you get tilled earth and a touch of black olive. This wine reveals good complexity to the bouquet and follows up with a streamlined, mid-weight mouthfeel. I found this vintage to be shorter compared to the 2015 edition tasted earlier in the year. Production is 35,000 bottles." - Monica Larner (November 2020)

2016 Le Potazzine Brunello di Montalcino
Price: $97.00       Your Price: $85.36            Quantity in Stock: 56
(96+ point) Le Potazzine always delivers a smooth and silky style with extreme elegance and the lifted cool-climate fruit that you get from this high-altitude growing site. The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is taut and firm with cherry fruit, dried raspberry, tilled earth, spice and blue flower. The wine sees an extended fermentation of 40 days and ages in botte grande for 42 months. This is a well-balanced wine that is slightly thinner, with one notch lower intensity in this vintage compared to past editions. You get a light, sharp and streamlined style. I prefer the 2015 vintage slightly to this wine, but I'm suggesting a longer drinking window here. This is an 18,000-bottle release that hits the market in January 2021. (ML) (11/2020) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

100% Sangiovese from two vineyards in Montalcino: ‘Le Prata’ close to Montalcino with SE exposure at 500m above sea level; and ‘La Torre’ in Sant’Angelo in Colle with SW exposure at 420m above sea level. Fermentation and maceration lasts 30 days. The wine then matures for 40 months in large oak cask before finishing in the bottle for 12 months before release. 1500 cases produced annually

2016 Il Marroneto Brunello di Montalcino
Price: $110.00    Your Price: $96.80            Quantity in Stock: 23
(96 Points) Out of the gate, the Il Marroneto 2016 Brunello di Montalcino shows exciting purity and red fruit intensity. Compared to the Madonna delle Grazie, this wine has an ever-more lifted quality to the bouquet, whereas the Madonna has a firmer underlying texture that bodes well for longer aging. The character here is fresh, lively, youthful and vibrant. In fact, I would recommend drinking this wine while all those elements are still intact. The bouquet is crazy fun to describe: I get whiffs of black cherry, macchia mediterranea (which is not too different from what we call chaparral in California), peppercorn, dried cranberry and even a whiff of something that reminded me of the delicious rosemary herb mix you stuff inside roast porchetta. The base of the wine is light, almost weightless, but its structure and firmness do eventually catch up on the long finish.  Monica Larner End of November 2020, The Wine Advocate

2016 San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino
Price: $77.00       Your Price: $67.76            Quantity in Stock: 59
(93 Points) The San Filippo 2016 Brunello di Montalcino offers a slightly exotic personality with smoked cedar, mahogany or teak followed by dark fruit, pressed blackberry and plum. The wine ages in large oak cask for two years. This is a robustly textured and muscular Brunello with full-bodied intensity that transcends both the bouquet and the mouthfeel. There's a lot going on, especially in terms of the wine's smokiness and spiciness, and there is good acidity and tannic structure to frame it all. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2016 San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucere
Price: $124.00    Your Price: $109.12          Quantity in Stock: 59
(94+ Points)This special selection of fruit from San Filippo is characterized by more intensity and concentration compared to the estate's classic Brunello. In this vintage, I also discovered a greater level of Sangiovese purity and direction, thanks to tight berry tones, dusty mineral, spice and balsam herb. To the palate, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino le Lucére delivers succulent fruit and even a touch of sweetness, all powered by tannins, clearly driven by both the oak and the fruit itself. This wine ages in a combination of barrique, tonneau and botte grande for two years.  -Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2016 Uccelliera Brunello di Montalcino
Price: $78.00       Your Price: $68.64            Quantity in Stock: 46
(96 Points) The Uccelliera 2016 Brunello di Montalcino opens to dark fruit and wild cherry with warmer tones of cured tobacco, spice and potting soil. It shows the extra density, darkness and richness that comes so beautifully to fruit grown on the sun-drenched southern side of Castelnuovo dell'Abate in the southern half of the appellation. What Uccelliera delivers so carefully, vintage after vintage, is a truly exceptional sense of mouthfeel with textural richness and lingering creaminess. It is also one of the wines that consistently shows a sense of place. This is a touchstone estate for this specific Montalcino microclimate.                             -Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2015 Altesino Riserva Brunello di Montalcino
Price: $130.25    Your Price: $114.62
(97 Points) Laced with ripe cherry, strawberry, floral, spice, iron and leather flavors, this red is complex and charming, yet with serious tannins that ply the structure and lift the long finish. The fine balance should facilitate longevity. Best from 2024 through 2048.  Wine Spectator

2015 Uccelliera Brunello di Montalcino Riserva
Price: $160.00    Your Price: $140.80          Quantity in Stock: 30
(97 Points) "The Uccelliera 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (with 9,600 bottles made) is a great achievement and is among my top favorite wines from Andrea Cortonesi tasted in the 20 or so years I have followed this estate. There is a lot of power here, thanks to that golden Castelnuovo dell'Abate sunshine, so I cannot liken this wine to some of the more ethereal and delicate expressions that I also love. Instead, this Riserva delivers brawn, dark fruit and muscle, but it does so with sincerity and honesty. You can't help but appreciate the complexity on offer. The wine offers plenty of dark fruit, but you also get licorice, balsam herb and crushed limestone. There is a lot of beauty to admire. Drink 2024-2048"  -Wine Advocate
