2002 Louis Latour Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru
Price: $99.00    Your Price: $84.15               Quantity in Stock: 7

(92 Points) Tightly wound now, this red shows density to its wild berry and cherry flavors, with a streak of mineral and fine length. There's a latent sweetness that offsets the firm, tensile structure, but this needs time to come together. Best from 2012 through 2022. 500 cases made. –BS  Wine Spectator Issue: Mar 31, 2010

Winery Notes:  Deep ruby in color, this wine unveils ripe fruit aromas and well-integrated hints of oak. The attack is straightforward; the tannins are well-integrated and supple. The discreet and pleasant flavors are persistent on the palate. This wine is enjoyable now and offers good cellaring potential. Tasted July 8th, 2009.

2005 Louis Jadot Puligny Montrachet Les Folatieres
Price: $119.00    Your Price: $101.15

This wine was the winner at our recent 2005 vintage white burgundy tasting!

2009 Bouchard Pere et Fils Meursault Genevrieres
Price: $94.00    Your Price: $79.90
Quantity in Stock: 1

I love this wine and it is my last bottle!  The 2009 whites are very lush and drinkable right now.

2002 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Gevrey-Chambertin
Price: $59.00    Your Price: $50.15               Quantity in Stock: 13

The village wines from 2002 are really starting to drink nicely but will last for a decade or more in your cellar!

2002 Louis Jadot Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Price: $159.00    Your Price: $135.15          Quantity in Stock: 13

(92 points) Bright red-ruby. Fresh but reticent aromas of black raspberry, licorice and minerals. Concentrated, dense and chewy but quite restrained and backward, with little early sweetness. This has a tight kernel of fruit and subtle hints of peat, minerals and earth. A Clos Vougeot with terrific backbone, and a long, aromatic, slowly mounting finish that really saturates the palate. (ST) 92+ (3/2005) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

2002 Vincent Girardin Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes
Price: $149.00    Your Price: $126.65
Quantity in Stock: 12

(93 Points) Deceptive. Forward and attractive now, but beyond the initial black cherry, forest underbrush and spice notes lies a brooding, mineral-infused red, smoldering with power and plenty in reserve. Best from 2009 through 2020.  Wine Spectator

2005 Faiveley Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Price: $230.00    Sale Price: $195.00

(92-95 pts) This too is very deftly oaked with an earthy and very ripe mix of briar, dark berry fruit and pungent underbrush aromas leading to muscled, energetic and sappy flavors where the mid-palate fat almost completely buffers the firm though not aggressive tannins that add a chewy texture to the gorgeously long finish. There is a really attractive underlying tension here but like most of these grands crus, this is a wine for the patient that will last for decades. Burghound.com

2005 Harmand-Geoffroy Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
Price: $149.00    Your Price: $126.65          Quantity in Stock: 20

The Harmand-Geoffroy domaine works a substantial section of this fine Grand Cru … over three-quarters of a hectare. The vines are between 40 and 70 years of age (as of 2011); they face east and sit on well-drained, marne-infused soil. As is often the case with the Grand Crus in this southern tier of Gevrey, this wine, although powerful, is distinguished and fine with notes of raspberry and red cherry fruit in its youth supplemented with the aromas of violet, rose and clove; a more wild side emerges as the wine ages and pepper, licorice and leather add nuance to this beautiful beast. We import between three and four barrels per annum for the US market (900 bottles plus a significant number of magnums).

2005 Domaine Dujac Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Price: $525.00    Your Price: $446.25          Quantity in Stock: 11

A great vintage and although by most expert’s standards still too young we are drinking this bottle for scientific purposes!  "Concentrated and fresh but backward, with very ripe flavors of jammy morello cherry and cinnamon...powerful style of Charmes, but with subtle finishing minerality." (92+ points) Stephen Tanzer, Vinous.com, March 2008

2009 Claude Dugat Gevrey-Chambertin
Price: $95.00    Your Price: $80.75               Quantity in Stock: 6
(92 points) Blackberry and dark plum aromas and flavors mark this brooding red. It's dense and concentrated, if not that expressive right now, with a lingering aftertaste of cherry and blackberry. Best from 2014 through 2025. (BS) (5/2012) Wine Spectator

2009 Serafin Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin

Price: $105.00    Your Price: $89.25             Quantity in Stock: 22
(90 points) Medium red. Full-blown aromas of coffee, mocha and game. Less fruity than the basic village wine but dense, sweet and nicely fresh, with a deep middle and plenty of medicinal reserve. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and persistent notes of chocolate, coffee and underbrush. (ST) (3/2012) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

2009 Joseph Drouhin Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Price: $189.00    Your Price: $160.65          Quantity in Stock: 1
(93 Points) A big, rich, yet brooding '09 red, with a hint of animal to the plum, cherry, currant and spice flavors that butt up against the massive, though not overly obtrusive, tannins. Compact now. Best from 2015 through 2032. Wine Spectator

2002 Vintage Burgundy by: Clive Cotes MW:

"The 2002 red Burgundies, while not at the top levels in the same league as the great 1999s (or indeed 2005), have proved to be very popular on the market place. The red wines have a good colour, a refreshing acidity, medium-full body, lots of plump fruit and ripe tannins. They are relaxed wines. There is a French phrase, applied to people, “bien dans sa peau”, literally: comfortable within one’s skin, i.e. at ease with oneself, which is an apt description of the 2002s. The vintage is fine at the generic level. The village and premiers crus are also delicious. It is only at top grand cru level that there is a clear difference vis à vis 1999. But subtract 1999 (and 2005 and 2009) from the equation and we have a year which is as good as anything else produced in recent memory. The vintage is also geographically consistent. Though some will suggest the Côte de Beaune is better than the Côte de Nuits, I do not agree. There are some lovely wines in Nuits-Saint-Georges and Chambolle-Musigny. For the third year in succession, said Jacques Lardière of Jadot, Gevrey-Chambertin is the best commune.

The white wines, too, are extremely good, perhaps even better than the reds. There is a refreshing acidity which brings out wonderfully elegant complex fruit. This is coupled with good weight and potential to age well. All in all, a highly successful vintage.

It was a severe winter, very cold – but dry – both before and after Christmas. I remember it being minus 8.5°C at 8.30 a.m. in Savigny-Lès-Beaune several mornings running. This was followed by a mild February and March, allowing an easy bud-break, but this was succeeded by a cool May. This retarded the flowering, but fine weather after June 13th meant that this turned out successfully, though the crop would not be excessive. The next 10 weeks were dry, but not too hot. And thankfully there were no hailstorms.

August was warm and still dry, and this led to a situation in the early days of September where the development of the fruit – the Chardonnays more than the Pinots – was somewhat blocked. Then there was rain. This did no harm except in Ladoix, where it was somewhat excessive, reducing the concentration of the Cortons and such Charlemagnes as come from the top of this side of the hill. This was soon followed by fine weather. From the middle of the month of September a cool north wind set in, accompanied by clear skies and cold nights. These conditions were similar to 1996 except that the crop in 1996 was larger and the weather had not been so fine in August. Volumes were reduced and concentration and potential alcohol levels accelerated by this drying wind. The harvest began on the 15th September. It was over by October 1st. The fruit was healthy but not in some cases completely ripe. The best growers waited a few days, benefiting from the continuing good weather, and then eliminated the berries that were not fully concentrated on the sorting table. It was hardly necessary to chaptalise. After October 1st the weather deteriorated, affecting the quality of the Hautes Côtes.

At first, there being quite a high level of malic acid, and the malos slow to complete, the 2002s were a bit aggressive. It was only after the malos had finished, and carbon dioxide levels started to decline – or were reduced by those who rack at the end of the summer – that the 2002s began to show their texture. These are wines of roundness and succulence as well as of pure fruit. At first there was somewhat less terroir definition than in the 1999s at the same stage, and although, according to Christian Gouges this aspect would improve, I feel, as Marie-Andrée Mugneret (Domaine Dr. Georges Mugneret) said, that the expression of the 2002s will always be more about Pinot Noir than exactly were they come from. It boils down to the weather pattern. A great vintage, which by definition, is one of wines which speak loudly of their origins, is the product of a fine August (août fait le mout) as well as a fine September. August 2002 was good, but not brilliant. And the first two weeks of September were inclement as well. Many growers, despite malos which in some cases still had not finished by the time of the 2003 harvest, decided to bottle early, “to preserve the fruit.”

Ten years on, it is quite clear that 2002 is a brilliant vintage for white wines in the Côte d'Or. It seems that the cooler weather in the first half of September concentrated the fruit and, most importantly, preserved the acidity. So we have wines which even ten years later are youthful, ripe, pure ,vigorous and profound. The best are hardly ready. The very best are quite sublime and will still improve. This is the best white wine vinatge for a generation, and has not been equalled, let alone surpassed, since.

The red wines are also delicious. There is some very lovely fruit, plenty of concentration, and lots of elegance. The tannins are there, but not obtruding, and these are fully ripe and sophisticated. The 2005s have greater strength, but these 2002s are not far behind. Altogether a highly satisfactory vintage which will last and last.

2002 is also very consistent. There are lovely wines in both colours throughout the Côte d'Or and throughout the Côte Chalonnaise. Only in the Hautes Côtes, though here mainly highly satisfactory wines can be found, is the pattern less even. Stick to the best growers and you can hardly go wrong."

2005 Vintage Red Burgundy

The 2005 vintage was outstanding for both red and white from both the Cotes de Beaune and the Cote de Nuit.  These wines have density of ripe fruit, intense color and enough structure and balance to last for another decade or more in your cellar.  The 2005 red Burgundies are blockbusters as Burgundy goes, dark in color and loaded with tannins along with a firm hand of acidity.

This vintage is the type that comes along once, maybe twice in a generation.  Some feel that the Côte de Nuits was more successful than the Côte de Beaune, but that is why we do these tastings!  We are doing serious scientific research here at the Wine Watch.

Unfortunately, greatness comes at a price. The 2005s are the most expensive red Burgundies ever released. For some trophy bottles, it seems that people are willing to pay almost anything. Even village wines are selling for upward of $100 and, in some cases, $200.   The “Blue Chip” wines have gone up exponentially from 2005 but some of the other wines are still an incredible value considering their limited production and we have an incredible offering along with this invite with everything from the outstanding 2005 vintage from Burgundy on sale and most of these great wines on this offering are at the best price in the world!

2009 Vintage Red Burgundy

This 2009 vintage from Burgundy is one of the most intriguing that I have ever experienced. We do tastings with the new releases from Burgundy every year and for the last two decades I have tasted great vintages upon release and can remember people who love wines leaving these events saying “I did not like any of these wines.” Burgundy can be very hard to enjoy when it is very young in a great vintages. The 2009 vintage seems to have the best of both worlds, an occurrence that rarely happens in a vintage that is considered to be GREAT in Burgundy. This rare trait of immediate drinkability and the ability to age, the thing that defines great vintages is a once in a lifetime occurrence in Burgundy and for those of you that appreciate this great wine we highly recommend that you attend this tasting. Many of this year’s top wines are now available for purchase and unlike in Bordeaux, the great wines of Burgundy are available in very limited quantities, some of Burgundy’s best wines have annual production levels in the hundreds rather than thousand of case range.

We will taste some of the top wines that have arrived including a preview of wines to be showing at the Alex Gambal tasting in February.  We could call February Pinot Noir month starting out with our Musigny tasting back to 1964 on the 2nd, then we are adding Pinot Noir to the Pre Valentines Champagne tasting and we will end the month with our good friend Alex Gambal on the 25th.

Alex makes extensive notes on the vintage as well as notes on the wines and I have included them below.  I would encourage you to read Alex's comprehensive notes as to why 2009 was a "once in a lifetime" vintage in Burgundy.  Here is a brief excerpt that sums up the vintage:

"Grapes sugars on steroids; did I write that? I am afraid so but it was and is still true. What happened in 2009 was very unusual because the skins i.e. tannins were ripe and continued to ripened actually in advance of the seeds. In 2005 you had very ripe seeds; really a 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 balance between the fruit, tannin and acid. In 2009 we have a much higher proportion of ripe tannins and a lower acid level with about normal to higher but not over the top sugar levels. At the end of the day this gives you a sweet velvety wine with no rough edges. Bear in mind however the tannin levels are VERY high but you simply do not notice them. After tasting through 10-15 different wines you begin to realize that there is a boatload of tannin in the wine but they are not aggressive or harsh; the sensations is of melted chocolate in the mouth."  Alex Gambal
